Sources: Nvidia has reworked a deal to finance an OpenAI Ohio data center campus so that it would initially guarantee only half of its planned $250B backstop

Wall Street Journal Anissa Gardizy

Context & Ripple Effects

The Ohio project was previously framed as a proposed 10GW, $500B-plus OpenAI campus, with Nvidia later reported to be discussing a roughly $250B backstop. The revised initial guarantee turns that proposed support into a more explicitly staged financing arrangement.

It also follows a series of changing Nvidia–OpenAI funding structures, including a stalled plan to invest up to $100B and later talks around a smaller investment. The terms of Nvidia’s support matter because the campus is being built by SoftBank’s energy subsidiary, SB Energy, rather than by Nvidia alone.

First-order effects

  • Nvidia initially limits its guarantee exposure to half of the planned $250B backstop, or $125B, instead of standing behind the full amount at the outset.
  • OpenAI and SB Energy gain a phased Nvidia guarantee for the Ohio campus, replacing the assumption of fully deployed backing from day one.

Second-order effects

  • Financiers assessing the Ohio project must distinguish between Nvidia’s initial $125B guarantee and the unguaranteed balance of the planned backstop, making the timing of later commitments more consequential.
  • SB Energy’s financing case for the campus becomes more tied to staged capital commitments as it pursues its reported plan to go public.

Third-order effects

  • If large AI-campus deals continue to be reworked into partial guarantees, compute buildouts will increasingly resemble project finance: capital is committed in stages as construction, leasing and funding milestones are met.
  • Nvidia’s shifting OpenAI commitments suggest that AI infrastructure partnerships may be governed less by headline investment totals than by how much risk each participant accepts at each phase.

The trend: AI infrastructure is moving toward phased, risk-shared financing structures rather than single upfront commitments for entire compute campuses.

People sometimes accuse me of being a NVIDIA shill, that I never criticize the company... I have some criticism to share about this I think these comms are just objectively bad. With the amount of people shouting about circular financing esp off the back of that 6 person

Okay so now instead of theoretically backstopping $250 billion NVIDIA would theoretically backstop $120 billion in a deal that is yet to be finalized for a data center that has yet to be built by a company that has never built a data center for a company that can't afford to pay

💰AI infrastructure news: Nvidia previously discussed $250 billion financial backstop for OpenAI / Softbank Energy mega site in Ohio, which spooked investors, but... financial guarantee being discussed rn is actually ~$100B. Still a lot!

Late Friday scoop from @anissagardizy8: Remember that $250 billion guarantee Nvidia was discussing for an OpenAI data center project? It's now likely to be less than $120 billion, with investors antsy about risk. https://www.wsj.com/...
