Twitch says it intends to use videos streamed on its platform to help train Amazon's generative AI content models and adds a setting for creators to opt out

The streaming platform Twitch will now use creators' content to help train generative AI models for its parent company, Amazon.

TechCrunch Amanda Silberling

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitch’s move extends Amazon’s long-running integration of the streaming service, which previously bundled creator-facing perks through Twitch Prime and sold ads in partners’ live streams. The relevant recent precedent is YouTube’s creator authorization tool for third-party AI training, but Twitch is applying the choice to training by its parent company.

First-order effects

  • Twitch creators must now decide whether to exclude their streamed videos from Amazon’s generative-AI training pool.
  • Amazon can use videos from creators who do not opt out as training material for its content models, while Twitch becomes the channel administering that preference.

Second-order effects

  • YouTube’s authorization-based approach becomes a clearer comparison point for creators evaluating how major video platforms govern AI-training rights.
  • Creators who value control over downstream AI use gain another platform setting to weigh alongside Twitch’s established monetization tools, including video ads in partner streams.

Third-order effects

  • If opt-out controls become the standard model, major content platforms will increasingly turn creator libraries into AI inputs while retaining control over the consent interface.
  • The competitive distinction may shift from whether platforms use creator content for models to how granularly they disclose and administer creator permissions.

The trend: Creator platforms are formalizing AI-training rights as a platform-governed content-commercialization layer, with consent settings mediating access to their archives.

We've added a setting that lets you opt out of having your channel content used to train generative AI content models across Amazon. Click here to learn more: https://link.twitch.tv/...

Holy: Anthropic investors are betting on a $ 2tn+ valuation in an October IPO, the largest stock-market debut ever. wtf: Backers expect annualised revenue to reach $100-120bn by year-end, up more than 10x during 2026. Anthropic was valued at $ 965bn in May after raising nearly $ …

holy shit, he literally admitted that its opt-in by default because they KNOW we don't want this. @Twitch @TwitchSupport do better. you're well aware we don't want it [video]

This is on by default, by the way. They're painting it in a more positive light by saying you have the freedom to opt out of SOME of this. Creator platforms really hate their creators, huh. Looking forward to my anti AI spiel on my front page stream ❤️ do better.

“Turning this off does NOT opt you out of Twitch and Amazon using your channel content for other purposes including using AI-supported Twitch features.” Buh?? [image]

Do you want to explain why under the opt-out option you say explicitly that you can just use it anyway?
  • @shelbygraces @shelbygraces on x
make sure you turn this off in account settings under security all the way at the bottom! and let twitch know you don't agree with automatic opt in!! we deserve the make the choice in the first place!

Another reason for “someone” to make an independant community powered & run streaming platform. Twitch once again proving to be out of touch with it's community. Twitch Trust & Safety, A Joke. Twitch AI Features, Useless. Twitch Revnue Splits, Predatory. [image]
