Former Alibaba star researcher Junyang Lin launches Shanghai-based Pragmatik Labs to build digital and physical AI agents; Pragmatik hit a $2B valuation in June

Former Alibaba star researcher Junyang Lin announced that he had started a new AI company, confirming The Information's earlier reports.

The Information Juro Osawa

Context & Ripple Effects

Pragmatik’s public launch confirms the company reported in June as Junyang Lin’s new lab, which had already secured several hundred million dollars at an approximately $2B post-money valuation. Lin’s Alibaba background also arrives as Alibaba has been reorienting around AI, making the startup a notable founder-led entrant in China’s model-and-agent competition.

The company is targeting both digital and physical agents, while other covered startups have specialized in agent operating systems or web-search infrastructure. That broader product scope makes Pragmatik a bet on agents as systems that act across software and real-world settings, rather than a single agent layer.

First-order effects

  • Pragmatik Labs moves from a reported financing to a named, Shanghai-based operating company, giving Junyang Lin a public vehicle to recruit, partner and build digital and physical AI agents.
  • The June valuation gives Pragmatik an unusually well-capitalized starting position relative to an agent-focused company still defining its product scope.

Second-order effects

  • Chinese AI rivals, including Zhipu, face another funded competitor for agent talent and deployment opportunities after Zhipu’s free-agent launch intensified the domestic race.
  • Companies building narrower agent layers—such as /dev/agents’ cross-device agent operating system and Parallel Web Systems’ web infrastructure—gain a potential customer, partner or rival as Pragmatik chooses what to build internally.

Third-order effects

  • If heavily funded labs increasingly pair foundation-model talent with digital and physical agent ambitions, competition shifts from model releases alone toward control of the software, interfaces and deployment channels through which agents act.
  • The pattern supports further concentration of early-stage AI capital around founders with frontier-model credentials, raising the threshold for independent agent startups seeking to compete across the stack.

The trend: AI funding is concentrating behind former frontier-model leaders building agent businesses that span software automation and physical-world deployment.

i studied linguistics because my friend recommended pragmatics to me. later i moved to computational linguistics and nlp. the name just means being back to where it happens. also, it means pragmaticism which we believe agi should targets on.

Congrats to @JustinLin610 and the Pragmatik team. Still remember his previous opinion that the object of model training is becoming the model-environment system. I guess that's what they doing at P7k. Very curious to see what they build with “Digital and physical worlds”

Former Qwen chief Junyang Lin is officially back — this time as a founder. Five months after leaving Alibaba, Lin has officially launched Pragmatik Labs, focused on AI agents for digital + physical worlds. Backers? HSG, Gaorong, Tencent. The company is reportedly already [image]

Former lead of Alibaba Qwen. p7k will focus on agentic, and physical/embodied agents and raised hundreds of millions USD from the top VCs + Tencent at (reported) $2bn valuation. Embodied AI is the end game. We are seeing the directions clearly now. Congrats @JustinLin610 🚀
