Elon Musk says SpaceX has decided to “build exclusively on Nvidia because we think the Vera Rubin architecture is the best architecture”

SpaceX says it's ready to be a one-chip supplier company.  —  On SpaceX's highly anticipated earnings call on Wednesday …

Business Insider Shubhangi Goel

Context & Ripple Effects

SpaceX had already been identified as an early user of Nvidia’s Vera CPUs, while its S-1 excerpts still listed manufacturing its own GPUs as a prospective capital expenditure. The new commitment resolves that tension in favor of Nvidia’s architecture.

The choice also follows Nvidia’s Vera Rubin design for orbital data centers, tying SpaceX’s infrastructure direction to a platform Nvidia has explicitly positioned for space-based AI workloads.

First-order effects

  • SpaceX will standardize its AI hardware buildout on Nvidia’s Vera Rubin architecture, narrowing the role for an internally developed GPU program described in its S-1 excerpts.
  • Nvidia gains an exclusive architecture commitment from SpaceX after identifying it among the first large users of Vera CPUs.

Second-order effects

  • SpaceX’s hardware and software teams can optimize around one vendor’s architecture rather than divide engineering effort across an internal GPU effort and external alternatives.
  • The commitment strengthens Nvidia’s position in the space-oriented AI infrastructure market that its Vera Rubin rollout is targeting.

Third-order effects

  • If large AI operators increasingly choose a single external architecture over bespoke accelerators, chip-platform ecosystems may gain influence at the expense of vertically integrated hardware programs.
  • SpaceX’s reversal from a disclosed in-house GPU ambition toward an exclusive supplier choice points to an AI hardware strategy split: differentiation may shift from designing chips to deploying an integrated stack.

The trend: AI infrastructure buyers are increasingly weighing bespoke chip development against committing deeply to a leading vendor’s integrated architecture.

Discussion

SpaceX has committed to using Nvidia GPUs exclusively because they are the best

AMD literally invested in xAI btw lol

should we give @elonmusk early access to gpt-5.6-sol ultrafast

A reminder that Elon Musk also recently claimed that Tesla has the best chip team in the world and that it will soon surpass NVIDIA in capabilities. Of course, it's all made up. Dojo didn't work. Most of the team left, but you know. Elon going to Elon.

The whole game is turning every megawatt into the most valuable tokens possible. And at that game, Nvidia is still the absolute best. With the US so constrained on electricity, you need the most efficient AI computer to maximize useful output and ultimately revenue per megawatt.

It is an honor to supply the world's most advanced engineering company with our products.

I guess we're supposed to believe that custom robots on the moon will be an easier job than custom silicon on earth [embedded post]
