Cloudflare announces Cloudflare Wallets so users can pay for APIs and content via stablecoins, with the ability to create Virtual Wallets for agentic shopping

The field of agentic commerce—a term that describes the use of bots for online buying and selling—is evolving fast.

Fortune Jeff John Roberts

Context & Ripple Effects

Cloudflare had already framed a US dollar-backed NET Dollar around payments for the “agentic web,” while reports later identified Coinbase and Zerohash as prospective issuers. Wallets moves that payment ambition from a planned currency toward an end-user and agent-facing payment interface.

The launch also arrives as Coinbase has introduced wallet infrastructure for autonomous agent transactions and Cloudflare has been building controls to distinguish crawlers and agents from legitimate traffic. That makes payment authorization increasingly relevant to how agents access APIs and content.

First-order effects

  • Cloudflare users gain a stablecoin payment route for APIs and content, while Virtual Wallets give agentic-shopping workflows a dedicated mechanism to transact.
  • API and content providers using Cloudflare can offer access that is paid for through the new wallet flow rather than relying solely on conventional billing paths.

Second-order effects

  • Coinbase, Circle, Stripe, and other builders of agent-payment infrastructure face a more integrated Cloudflare offering at the network edge, where APIs and content are delivered.
  • Publishers and API operators gain a practical incentive to connect agent access rules with transaction terms, especially as Cloudflare separately gives publishers controls over AI crawling.

Third-order effects

  • If these wallet flows gain adoption, agentic commerce will increasingly treat payment credentials as an access-control layer for machine customers, not merely a checkout method.
  • Cloudflare’s parallel work on bot classification, crawl controls, and payments points toward web infrastructure in which identifying an agent, granting it access, and charging it are more tightly coupled.

The trend: Agentic commerce is moving toward stablecoin wallets that combine autonomous payment capability with permissioned access to digital services.

Usernames aren't the web. Not everything has to be a username. The right of registration and first claim do not convey trust. A handle system means Cloudflare owns identity. Not DNS, not URLs. It's weird seeing this from Cloudflare, famously a web and internet absolutist. [image]
