SpaceX reports Q2 revenue up 92% YoY to $7.8B, vs. $6.81B est., AI operating loss of $1.26B, vs. $2.39B est., and says Q3 and Q4 capex will remain similar to Q2
SpaceX stock fell after the company disclosed higher-than-expected spending on its artificial intelligence business …
Bloomberg
Context & Ripple Effects
SpaceX's AI push has already changed the group's financial profile: related coverage tied the February xAI acquisition to a 2025 loss after the company had been profitable in 2024. Q2 then showed AI revenue ahead of expectations alongside a sharp rise in AI capital expenditure.
The new guidance turns a one-quarter investment spike into a near-term spending commitment. That matters because the market reaction has focused on the cost of building the AI business even as group revenue and the AI operating result exceeded expectations.
First-order effects
- SpaceX will carry Q2-scale capital expenditure through Q3 and Q4, extending the near-term cash demands of an AI segment that accounted for most of the quarter's investment.
- Investors must assess stronger revenue and a narrower-than-expected AI operating loss against continued heavy spending; the disclosed spending has already sent SpaceX shares lower.
Second-order effects
- The AI segment's above-estimate Q2 revenue gives SpaceX a clearer operating case for sustained investment, but its $15.8B Q2 AI outlay raises the revenue needed to support that cadence.
- SpaceX's $100B of cash and marketable securities and $47.5B backlog provide capacity to fund the plan, while making capital-allocation discipline a more central measure of performance than quarterly revenue alone.
Third-order effects
- If sustained AI investment becomes the operating model, SpaceX's valuation will increasingly hinge on whether AI revenue scales fast enough to convert infrastructure spending into durable returns rather than on its legacy businesses alone.
- The company is an example of AI infrastructure being financed from a large corporate balance sheet, concentrating both the upside and execution risk within companies able to maintain multibillion-dollar capex programs.
The trend: AI infrastructure is shifting from a short-term buildout to a balance-sheet commitment whose economics are judged against revenue growth and capital intensity together.

Elon is the master at explaining the long-term vision in simple terms. Thats a key reason why shares of $SPCX are going higher. On the call he said: 1. Now they deliver 2500 tons a year to orbit by Falcon. Rest of world does around 300 tons. Thats 80% of mass with Falcon.
