Sources: Nvidia commits to invest $5B in Ilya Sutskever's Safe Superintelligence; SSI had previously raised ~$3B in funding and had a $32B valuation in 2025

Nvidia Corp. has committed to invest $5 billion in Ilya Sutskever's artificial intelligence startup Safe Superintelligence Inc.

Bloomberg Shirin Ghaffary

Context & Ripple Effects

SSI's funding trajectory had already moved rapidly from a $1B seed-round raise to a $2B round at a $32B valuation. The reported Nvidia commitment adds a strategic infrastructure provider to a financing story previously led by financial backers.

Related coverage says Nvidia's investment also gives SSI access to GPUs intended to increase its computing power by an order of magnitude, making the arrangement more than a passive equity stake.

First-order effects

  • SSI gains a reported $5B commitment and expanded Nvidia GPU access, increasing the resources available for its model-development program.
  • Nvidia deepens its financial and technical relationship with SSI, tying part of its investment to demand for its computing platform.

Second-order effects

  • The deal raises the bar for frontier AI startups: capital availability and assured compute capacity increasingly arrive together rather than as separate procurement and fundraising decisions.
  • Other chip suppliers and cloud-compute providers face pressure to offer similarly integrated capital, hardware access, or both to win high-profile AI workloads.

Third-order effects

  • If this pattern persists, AI infrastructure providers will become more consequential allocators of startup capital, concentrating influence over which frontier labs can secure large-scale compute.
  • The arrangement points toward an AI market in which strategic financing can reinforce hardware-platform adoption; whether that narrows supplier choice will depend on the availability of credible alternative compute sources.

The trend: Frontier AI financing is evolving into compute finance, with chipmakers using capital commitments and capacity access together to anchor major model builders to their platforms.

Why didn't they say how much? The answer is $5B, reported elsewhere... What's the point of saying “substantial” investment instead of telling us the actual number which will def leak?

We are announcing a long-term strategic partnership with NVIDIA. NVIDIA is making a substantial investment in SSI that will let us 10x our compute in the next 12 months. We reached the point where our research is worth scaling and with this partnership we will be able to. We are …

You have to give it to Ilya and SSI > no leaks for 2 years > quiet as a mouse > no updates > July 27th - “We reached the point where our research is worth scaling” The most minimalist AI lab to grace the frontier

I think Ilya really cares about safety, but also superintelligence is dangerous regardless of who builds it And as a reminder, a lot of AI regulation on the books + in draft form does not cover SSI, because of revenue requirements https://x.com/...

the age of research is over. now it's the age of scaling

So that, too, is the “closed models” that the open models Coalition supports. I've just recently thought: SSI and DeepSeek are surprisingly similar. Sole focus on intelligence, disdain for intermediate products. The difference is that Ilya lives in conditions of communism.
