X rolls out X Money to US Premium and Premium+ subscribers, combining a deposit account with up to 6% APY, free instant transfers on X, and a Visa debit card

X has officially launched X Money, which includes Apple Wallet support, moving the service beyond its invite-only beta and beginning a rollout today.

9to5Mac Zac Hall

Context & Ripple Effects

X first outlined a Visa-backed wallet and peer-to-peer payments product in its 2025 X Money Account announcement. The service’s move from invitation-only access to a broader subscriber rollout turns that plan into a consumer offering with payments, a debit card, and a yield-bearing deposit account in one product.

The launch also follows reports that the US effort had stalled amid executive departures and state-regulator concerns. Apple Wallet support gives the rollout an immediate place in an established mobile-wallet workflow.

First-order effects

  • US Premium and Premium+ subscribers can begin using X Money’s deposit account, in-app instant transfers, Visa debit card, and Apple Wallet support as availability expands beyond the beta.
  • X gains a new paid-subscriber benefit and a direct payments touchpoint, while Visa becomes the card-network partner for the consumer launch.

Second-order effects

  • The bundled yield and no-fee in-app transfers raise the bar for X’s subscription proposition, putting pressure on other social and wallet products to clarify whether payments are a retention feature or a standalone business.
  • Apple Wallet compatibility lowers the friction between an X-issued card and everyday point-of-sale spending, making card usage—not just peer-to-peer transfers—the key test of engagement.

Third-order effects

  • If X can sustain the rollout under applicable oversight, social platforms may increasingly compete for users through integrated financial accounts rather than limiting payments to checkout or transfers.
  • The earlier reports of regulatory friction suggest that expansion of platform-linked financial products will be shaped as much by licensing and compliance execution as by user adoption.

The trend: X Money is part of the broader shift toward platforms bundling payments, cards, and account features into subscription-led consumer ecosystems.

What's this about payment processors being real concerned about the kind of content that's transacted for on their networks?  Do we need to write some letters to Visa?  Hmmm??? [embedded post]
