Nvidia says it made a “substantial” investment in Safe Superintelligence, which will get access to Nvidia GPUs to up computing power by an “order of magnitude”
Partnership with former top OpenAI scientist aims to boost chip giant's high-profile customer roster during AI boom

Context & Ripple Effects
Safe Superintelligence had already assembled a mixed infrastructure and investor base: Google Cloud said the lab was using TPUs, while Alphabet and Nvidia were among its backers in an earlier SSI funding round. Nvidia's new commitment adds a more direct Nvidia-compute dimension to that relationship.
Safe Superintelligence gains access to Nvidia GPUs sufficient to target a tenfold increase in computing capacity, while Nvidia gains a deeper commercial relationship with another high-profile AI lab.
Nvidia's investment makes SSI both a portfolio company and a potential large-scale GPU user, aligning the supplier's capital exposure with the lab's infrastructure buildout.
Second-order effects
SSI's expanded Nvidia access strengthens the competitive importance of securing dedicated accelerator capacity; rival frontier-model builders and cloud providers will face greater pressure to offer credible long-duration compute pathways.
The arrangement puts Nvidia more directly alongside Google Cloud's TPU relationship with SSI, reinforcing competition between accelerator ecosystems for frontier-lab workloads.
Third-order effects
If this model persists, AI infrastructure financing will increasingly bind chip vendors' investment portfolios to the future demand they help enable, blurring the line between supplier, financier, and strategic partner.
The key structural question is whether frontier labs retain meaningful multi-vendor compute flexibility as capital-linked hardware commitments become more common.
The trend: Nvidia is extending its role from AI hardware vendor to infrastructure financier, using investments and compute access to anchor demand among frontier-model developers.
We are announcing a long-term strategic partnership with NVIDIA. NVIDIA is making a substantial investment in SSI that will let us 10x our compute in the next 12 months. We reached the point where our research is worth scaling and with this partnership we will be able to. We are …
NVIDIA is making a substantial investment into Ilya Sutskever's secretive Safe Superintelligence after being given an exclusive look into their research. As part of the deal SSI will receive access to enough NVIDIA GPUs to increase their computing power by an order of magnitude. …
$NVDA invests in Safe Superintelligence founded by OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and gives SSI access to Vera Rubin. Sutskever says SSI has research “worthy of scaling up” as the companies collaborate on future NVIDIA compute platforms. [image]
I think Ilya really cares about safety, but also superintelligence is dangerous regardless of who builds it And as a reminder, a lot of AI regulation on the books + in draft form does not cover SSI, because of revenue requirements https://x.com/...
You have to give it to Ilya and SSI > no leaks for 2 years > quiet as a mouse > no updates > July 27th - “We reached the point where our research is worth scaling” The most minimalist AI lab to grace the frontier
>Oust your co-founder over safety concerns >Fail >Found a competing lab >Raise $1B, dedicate it to “research” >Go radio silent for 2 years, ~zero leaks >Surprise announcement: “We've reached the point where our research is worth scaling” >Still no details Insane aura tbh
So that, too, is the “closed models” that the open models Coalition supports. I've just recently thought: SSI and DeepSeek are surprisingly similar. Sole focus on intelligence, disdain for intermediate products. The difference is that Ilya lives in conditions of communism.
Why didn't they say how much? The answer is $5B, reported elsewhere... What's the point of saying “substantial” investment instead of telling us the actual number which will def leak?
SCOOP: NVIDIA is set to invest $5 bil in cash in Ilya Sutskever's SSI, making it one the chip company's larger startup investments. https://www.bloomberg.com/...
