Sources: Nvidia is in talks to provide a ~$250B backstop for OpenAI as part of a 10 GW data center project that SoftBank's energy subsidiary is building in Ohio

Project would be one of the largest AI computing hubs and involve power controlled by the U.S. government  —  Nvidia is in talks to provide …

Wall Street Journal

Context & Ripple Effects

The reported backstop would extend an NvidiaOpenAI infrastructure relationship that began with a commitment to deploy at least 10 GW of Nvidia systems and later shifted toward a potential chip-leasing structure.

It also follows reports that OpenAI was negotiating to lease a proposed Ohio campus, making the financing of the project—not only the supply of computing hardware—the immediate issue.

First-order effects

  • A roughly $250 billion Nvidia backstop, if agreed, would give OpenAI a potential credit support mechanism for the 10 GW Ohio project being developed by SoftBank’s energy subsidiary.
  • Nvidia would move beyond supplying systems and investing in OpenAI toward underwriting part of the customer’s infrastructure commitment; SoftBank’s project would gain a prospective financial anchor.

Second-order effects

  • The arrangement could make the project more financeable for lenders and other counterparties, while tying OpenAI’s capacity build-out more closely to Nvidia’s infrastructure ecosystem.
  • It raises the competitive bar for other AI infrastructure providers: competing with Nvidia may increasingly require financing structures alongside chips and data-center capacity.

Third-order effects

  • If replicated, AI build-outs may be financed more like long-duration utility-scale projects, with hardware suppliers, developers and model companies sharing financing risk rather than operating as separate vendors and customers.
  • That model would concentrate infrastructure relationships among a small set of capital-rich participants and make access to power, credit support and committed demand as consequential as accelerator performance.

The trend: AI infrastructure is evolving into a finance-intensive, utility-scale market in which capital commitments and power access are becoming integral to compute supply.

Some more interesting details from the WSJ. NVIDIA are also discussing an additional $350 billon in financing for OpenAI, so that OpenAI can buy $350 billion worth of NVIDIA chips for the site. [image]

Spoiler Alert: Nvidia cannot guarantee this financing and the trick won't work like before because banks are now steering clear from circular financing [image]

I was so boggled by the numbers I didn't type it as ‘NVIDIA’ like I usually do.

So that they have a chance to compete for the AI workflows of ~300m businesses, and all their employees, in the world ex-China. All circular financing claims forget who the real customers driving AI demand are/will be.

Oof, more bad news for AI bears. $NVDA is in talks with OpenAI to provide a ~$250B backstop for their financing of a 10GW data center. I'll ask again... why is $NVDA underwriting an additional $250B for demand that supposedly isn't real? [image]

“The $250 billion guarantee would cover the data center lease and debt needed to fund its build out, but not the Nvidia chips that would go inside it.  Nvidia, which has invested $30 billion in OpenAI, is also discussing a deal to finance the chip purchase for OpenAI, which could…
