Sources: Apple delayed its AI glasses launch partly over privacy concerns that Meta's glasses created for the category, as it works on new features and policies

Company debated whether glasses will be able to record video.  —  Apple's upcoming smart glasses have a major challenge in front of them …

Bloomberg Mark Gurman

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple’s glasses effort has moved from exploratory market research to a reported schedule delay: prior coverage said its iPhone-connected model had slipped to late 2027, while Apple had earlier used an internal study of existing smart glasses to inform the product direction.

The immediate issue is not only technical capability but the category’s social permission to capture others. Meta’s reported testing of glasses that continuously collect ambient audio and periodic photos makes Apple’s video-recording debate consequential for how consumers and bystanders judge the whole segment.

First-order effects

  • Apple must resolve which recording features to ship and pair them with policies that address the privacy concerns tied to the delay, potentially constraining its initial feature set and timing.
  • Meta’s glasses create a more visible privacy benchmark for the category, making its capture-oriented product choices relevant to scrutiny of rival devices as well as its own.

Second-order effects

  • Other smart-glasses makers will face pressure to make capture behavior legible to both wearers and bystanders, rather than treating cameras and microphones as background hardware features.
  • A delayed Apple entry gives existing category players more time to define user expectations, but also makes privacy safeguards a product-differentiation axis alongside AI features and price.

Third-order effects

  • If recording-capable AI glasses gain adoption, the market is likely to compete on governance embedded in hardware—controls, indicators, and usage policies—not solely on model capabilities.
  • The category may split between devices optimized for always-available environmental capture and products that limit or narrowly scope capture to earn broader social acceptance; Apple’s final design will be an important test of that trade-off.

The trend: AI wearables are turning privacy design from a compliance consideration into a core determinant of product launch timing and category adoption.

@markgurman Seems like it would be a very complicated pitch to users. “It has cameras but you can't take pictures with it.”

Also in Power On: Apple is currently in late-stage testing of three new Apple Watch models: the Series 12 in Wi-Fi-only and cellular varieties (code-named N237 and N238), plus the Ultra 4 (N240). I haven't yet heard of a new Apple Watch SE planned for 2026. https://www.bloomberg.…

@markgurman Cameras for AI only from the company that made iPhones the most used cameras in the world? Yeah I'd be very surprised too. I mean why would a camera ever have to be exclusive to ai or photos lol

Controversy be damned, Meta is still going big on marketing. Stopped by my local Best Buy for the first time in a few weeks and there's a whole Meta Glasses shop inside the store. [image]

Power On: Apple's upcoming smart glasses - planned to be introduced as early as next June at WWDC 2027 ahead of a release next fall - will need to overcome the privacy baggage and reputation associated with Meta's offerings. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

just as I suspected... kinda hope they go in that direction just to get the category off the ground again

I understand why privacy is Apple #1 priority. Except when I'm doing an outdoor activity (ski, trail, bike...) I stopped wearing my Meta sunglasses. One reason is some people just don't feel good with cameras near them.

During development, Apple has considered camera-free models and heavily debated the idea of making cameras exclusive to AI - not photo taking and recording. I'd be surprised if Apple goes with that direction.

Looking ahead, there is ongoing work on a bigger rethink to the Apple Watch, but I wouldn't expect that to arrive for another year or two. And Apple is still moving toward getting a blood-sugar feature to the market this decade, making good on a project conceived in the Jobs era.

“Apple executives are acutely aware that simply entering the same category [as Meta's Pervert Glasses] risks undermining a privacy reputation the company has spent more than a decade building.”
