OpenAI says it now has 10M people using Codex and ChatGPT Work, nearly doubling usage from earlier this month when the company announced ChatGPT Work

Bloomberg Shirin Ghaffary

Context & Ripple Effects

OpenAI’s work-focused push is building on an already large ChatGPT base: the company reported more than 900 million weekly active users in February, alongside 1.6 million weekly Codex users in its February usage update.

The latest figure also follows OpenAI’s internal evidence that Codex use was spreading beyond developers, with non-developer usage rising sharply at the company in its June Codex adoption report.

First-order effects

  • OpenAI says the combined user base for Codex and newly announced ChatGPT Work has reached 10 million, nearly twice the level reported earlier this month.
  • The rapid increase gives OpenAI a larger installed base for its work-oriented assistant and coding products, though the report does not separate usage between the two.

Second-order effects

  • Competing AI work and coding tools face stronger pressure to show that they can match the reach of an integrated general assistant and developer tool.
  • A larger shared audience can make it easier for OpenAI to move users between coding and broader workplace tasks, reinforcing demand for a unified AI work surface.

Third-order effects

  • If adoption continues across technical and non-technical roles, workplace AI competition may increasingly center on owning the primary interface for work rather than selling isolated copilots.
  • The key uncertainty is whether early usage translates into durable organizational deployment, rather than short-term uptake following a product launch.

The trend: This is another sign of workplace-agent generalization, as AI products move from specialist coding tools toward a common work interface across roles.

Hang on, are there not a *total* of estimated ~26-30M software engineers, globally?? Based on last numbers I'm aware It just seems incredibly high to assume 30-35% them are daily active Codex users Or we're seeing the pool of those using Codex explains well beyond software?

What is the moat?!?! 1 week can shift momentum, now claude code (anthropic) is up against the ropes. A good model and enough COMPUTE, I cant emphasize enough the importance of having enough compute to actually serve users. We saw the issue with Fable, how they are struggling

Woohoo!🎊🎉 I was down to 3% on my Pro account with more than 3 days to go on my weekly limit! Perfect timing for 10M members and another reset! Thank you to all new users and the Codex king Tibo!

Oh nooooo... I literally used one of my free resets 10 minutes ago 😭 Now I've got 1 hour to burn my entire weekly usage. Mission accepted 🫡 [image]

What happened to banked resets? This literally done nothing for 80% of users who either just had a reset, or used a banked reset?

They were at 7m about two weeks ago, this is insane. Get used to seeing charts like this, this is the 2027 chart style.
