OpenAI says it now has 10M people using Codex and ChatGPT Work, nearly doubling usage from earlier this month when the company announced ChatGPT Work

OpenAI has seen a sharp uptick in demand for its artificial intelligence agents since its recent release of ChatGPT Work …

Bloomberg Shirin Ghaffary

Context & Ripple Effects

OpenAI’s new 10 million-user figure for Codex and ChatGPT Work follows a broader expansion in its business-facing audience: it previously reported more than 1.6 million weekly Codex users and 900 million-plus weekly ChatGPT users. The update matters because it isolates adoption of newer work-oriented products rather than the general ChatGPT audience.

Earlier coverage showed ChatGPT’s overall user base and paying-business base rising rapidly, including 5 million paying business users reported in 2025. The near-term question is whether this work-product uptake converts broad ChatGPT familiarity into sustained workflow use.

First-order effects

  • OpenAI gains evidence that its recent ChatGPT Work launch is quickly attracting users alongside Codex, strengthening the company’s enterprise and developer-product distribution.
  • The 10 million figure gives OpenAI a larger active base from which to refine and position Codex and ChatGPT Work as distinct work surfaces, rather than only general-purpose chat tools.

Second-order effects

  • Rival AI providers and workplace-software vendors face more pressure to make their assistants useful across everyday work tasks, not just offer standalone chat interfaces.
  • For customers already using ChatGPT, faster adoption of work-specific products can raise the value of standardizing on OpenAI’s tools, while increasing scrutiny of whether the products deliver repeatable workflow benefits.

Third-order effects

  • If rapid uptake persists, AI competition may increasingly center on owning the daily work surface where coding and knowledge tasks begin—an instance of OpenAI’s expanding work-product adoption.
  • The key structural test is conversion from adoption to durable organizational use: broad user counts alone do not establish how deeply these tools are embedded in company workflows or budgets.

The trend: This is one data point in the shift from general AI chatbots toward integrated, agent-like work products that seek recurring use across knowledge work and software development.

Woohoo!🎊🎉 I was down to 3% on my Pro account with more than 3 days to go on my weekly limit! Perfect timing for 10M members and another reset! Thank you to all new users and the Codex king Tibo!

They were at 7m about two weeks ago, this is insane. Get used to seeing charts like this, this is the 2027 chart style.

Oh nooooo... I literally used one of my free resets 10 minutes ago 😭 Now I've got 1 hour to burn my entire weekly usage. Mission accepted 🫡 [image]

What is the moat?!?! 1 week can shift momentum, now claude code (anthropic) is up against the ropes. A good model and enough COMPUTE, I cant emphasize enough the importance of having enough compute to actually serve users. We saw the issue with Fable, how they are struggling

Tibo is back! And so are the resets! Weekly reset is incoming. Congrats OpenAI for 10m active Codex users!

What happened to banked resets? This literally done nothing for 80% of users who either just had a reset, or used a banked reset?

Hang on, are there not a *total* of estimated ~26-30M software engineers, globally?? Based on last numbers I'm aware It just seems incredibly high to assume 30-35% them are daily active Codex users Or we're seeing the pool of those using Codex explains well beyond software?
