Google renames NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook and rolls out an update giving every notebook a secure cloud computer, letting it write and execute code natively

We're renaming NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook.  It's the same standalone product, now doing more across the Google ecosystem and updated with a secure cloud computer.

Google Josh Woodward

Context & Ripple Effects

NotebookLM began as an AI-first notebook and later gained an enterprise tier with access and data-management controls. More recently, Google moved it onto Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity for agentic and advanced-reasoning capabilities aimed initially at AI Ultra users.

The rename brings that product explicitly under the Gemini brand while extending native code execution through a secure cloud computer to every notebook. It turns a source-grounded notebook from primarily an analysis interface into a more active work environment.

First-order effects

  • Gemini Notebook users gain an execution environment inside each notebook, allowing generated code to be run without leaving the product.
  • Google unifies NotebookLM more visibly with Gemini while making a capability previously associated with higher-end agentic upgrades broadly available within the notebook product.

Second-order effects

  • The product becomes a stronger destination for research-to-analysis workflows, potentially reducing the need to move notebook context into separate coding or execution tools.
  • Enterprise adoption will place greater emphasis on the existing access and data-management controls, since notebooks can now perform work as well as summarize and reason over supplied material.

Third-order effects

  • If Google continues embedding execution and agentic reasoning into document-centered products, the boundary between an AI assistant, notebook, and development workspace will narrow.
  • The durable competitive issue shifts from standalone model quality toward whether providers can offer trusted, governed work surfaces where users can supply context, delegate tasks, and verify outputs.

The trend: This is part of the shift from conversational AI features toward integrated, agentic work surfaces that combine context, reasoning, and execution in one governed workspace.

I have some news. But first a little backstory. Almost exactly four years ago, I drove down to Mountain View for my first day as a Google employee. I was fifty-four years old, and somehow had managed to avoid ever having a proper job over that entire period, other than a few [ima…

I still remember the exact room, watching @stevenbjohnson break down how he writes books. That was the spark for a little project we never imagined would grow this big. Today, over 30 million people and 600,000 organizations use it, and it keeps growing. We all feel like it's
