Anthropic says it is “extending Claude Fable 5 access on all paid plans, as well as keeping Claude Code's weekly rate limits 50% higher, through July 19”

The Economic Times

Context & Ripple Effects

Related coverage shows Anthropic had planned to move Claude Fable 5 toward token-based usage, while saying it hoped to return the model to subscription plans when capacity permitted. The successive extensions indicate that transition has been deferred rather than abandoned.

The temporary higher Claude Code limits tie the decision to developer usage as well as general paid-plan access, making capacity allocation across Anthropic’s product tiers the immediate issue.

First-order effects

  • Paid Claude subscribers retain access to Fable 5 through July 19 instead of facing the previously signaled usage-based shift.
  • Claude Code users keep weekly limits 50% above the normal level through the same period, preserving more near-term room for coding workloads.

Second-order effects

  • Anthropic postpones a near-term pricing and access change, delaying the point at which heavy Fable 5 users would move to token-based consumption.
  • The extension gives paid users and teams more time to embed Fable 5 and Claude Code into workflows, while Anthropic continues to balance that demand against available capacity.

Third-order effects

  • If temporary extensions recur, frontier-model subscriptions may increasingly operate as variable-access products, with rate limits and billing models adjusted around capacity rather than fixed plan promises.
  • The case illustrates a broader tension in AI software: vendors want predictable subscription revenue and broad adoption, but scarce inference capacity can push high-intensity use toward metered pricing.

The trend: AI model providers are using access windows, rate limits, and usage-based pricing as flexible tools for managing demand for capacity-constrained premium models.

Morning. The last 48 hours of Codex and ChatGPT Work have been intense! Three important updates: - Temporarily removing the 5 hour usage limit restriction for all Plus, Business and Pro plans - Rolling out changes that will make GPT 5.6 Sol more efficient across the board and

We're extending Claude Fable 5 access on all paid plans, as well as keeping Claude Code's weekly rate limits 50% higher, through July 19.

This is tiresome. Manipulation, lack of planning, reaction to cancellations...who cares. OpenAI is excited about giving us access to their models. Anthropic tolerates us. Hard to miss the difference.
  • @gergelyorosz Gergely Orosz on x
This is why competition leads to much better outcomes for customers and consumers, in general If it was not for GPT-5.6 released a few days ago, Anthropic would have most likely removed Fable from most paid plans, and charged $$$ for access But with GPT-5.6 out, they cannot

Thank you, OpenAI, Meta, xAI, GLM, Kimi, Cursor, Cognition, for keeping the pressure on Claude to extend Fable access forever.

They should just do this every week for the next year. Free impressions.

so we're really just gonna do this forever huh

I'm done with them fucking with us. Ended up in hospital today from stress. Stayed up all night pushing my limits too hard, thinking it would be removed. Health comes first. Do better @AnthropicAI [image]

BOOM! Fable 5 staying on subs. I called this yesterday Anthropic was going to concede the AI race to OpenAI if they didn't do this Nobody was going to use Fable 5 on API pricing. Outrageously expensive. So people would be stuck with Opus 4.8. Opus 4.8 vs ChatGPT 5.6 has the

I don't think Anthropic realizes how disruptive these changes are to users. I appreciate the extension, but please stop playing games. Either keep it under the subscriptions or put it under the API already.
  • @rhyssullivan Rhys on x
i really don't get why anthropic communicates like this it feels like it'd be much better PR-wise for them to “Fable is included in the paid plans until X date, which may be extended based on capacity” the other thing is announcing this 1-2 days in advance, rather than day of
  • @kimmonismus @kimmonismus on x
lol. Fable 5 extended by another 7 days. I mean, thank you, appreciate it. But since it has now been extended several times, it might as well just keep it in the plan. (Perhaps GPT-5.6 was simply too much of a competitive launch, even for Anthropic.)
  • @claudeai Claude on x
As before, you can use up to half of your weekly usage limit on Fable 5. After that, you can continue using Fable 5 with usage credits, or switch to another model to keep working within your remaining limits. More details here: https://support.claude.com/...

Planning for how to use AI is a lot easier if there is some clarity about what to expect in the future. Even a “we fully intend to keep extending this week by week but may need to stop under the following conditions and here is what the current status is” would be better.
  • @alltheyud Eliezer Yudkowsky on x
@anthropicai, do not make the mistake the OpenAI board made. Explain your reasons fast. If the reasons are, “We are using training compute to serve Fable broadly and we can't keep that up indefinitely”, SAY SO to avoid losing customer trust and respect.
  • @juliarturc Julia Turc on x
I'll take it, but it's such an annoying attempt to milk it and stay relevant on X. Just include it in the subscription or not. What is up with this continuous “7 more days for the plebs”, I feel treated like a toddler.
