Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, BlackRock, Coinbase, and 140+ companies join Open Standard to launch Open USD, a stablecoin that shares earnings from its reserves
Quick Take — Payment giants, banks, tech firms and crypto companies are among Open Standard's launch members.
The Block Kyle Baird
Context & Ripple Effects
The launch follows a widening move by payments firms, fintechs and banks to issue or support dollar-linked tokens. Stripe had already opened a platform for companies to create stablecoins, while a bank group was exploring G7-currency versions.
Visa’s earlier USDC merchant-network connection and Mastercard’s plan for settlement across several regulated USD stablecoins show that major card networks have been building support for multiple issuers rather than treating stablecoins as a single-provider market.
First-order effects
- Open Standard’s founding members gain a shared Open USD initiative, adding a consortium-backed option alongside the regulated USD stablecoins Mastercard has said it will support.
- The reserve-earnings-sharing design makes the economics of holding or distributing Open USD a central differentiator for participating firms and prospective users.
Second-order effects
- Existing stablecoin issuers and issuance platforms face pressure to compete not only on regulatory positioning and network reach, but also on how reserve income is allocated to ecosystem participants.
- Payment networks, wallets and merchants that are already preparing for multi-stablecoin settlement may have another token to integrate, reinforcing demand for issuer-neutral routing and support infrastructure.
Third-order effects
- If large payment, asset-management, fintech and crypto firms continue forming issuance alliances, stablecoins could evolve from issuer-led products into consortium-governed payment networks whose reserve economics are shared across distributors.
- The pattern points toward a more fragmented but interoperable dollar-stablecoin market, with adoption shaped by settlement access, distribution incentives and governance as much as by the peg itself.
The trend: Stablecoin competition is shifting from standalone crypto issuance toward payment-industry infrastructure, multi-token settlement and shared economic incentives for distributors.

Few thoughts on OUSD - The 140+ initial partners have a **massive** amount of distribution outside of crypto. (And that's 9,730 potential B2B stablecoin payment flows.) - OUSD brings together some of the largest payments companies and Tier 1 crypto exchanges, giving it

Another example of how clear rules of the road can unlock massive value. What GENIUS did for stablecoins, the Clarity Act will do for all other digital assets.

“OpenUSD” is an important test of Ethereum's relevance. With Stripe as a founding member, it launches natively on Tempo. If OUSD still gravitates to Ethereum despite that, that is a big win. If it does not, the “world settlement layer” claim deserves serious doubt.

2/ Open Standard is building around a few core principles. It will have collaborative governance and be operated by an independent company with a board made up of partner members, ensuring decisions about Open USD are made for the collective interest rather than a single member.
