Top500: China's Arm-based LineShine passes the US' El Capitan by 20%+ as the world's fastest supercomputer, the first time China has taken the crown since 2017

A supercomputer in Shenzhen was declared the world's fastest.  It uses only standard microprocessors and not the special-purpose chips called graphics processing units.

China previously held the Top500 lead with Sunway TaihuLight and Tianhe-2 in 2017, after rapidly expanding its representation in the ranking during the mid-2010s. By 2025, the US held the top three positions, led by El Capitan.

LineShine reverses that headline ordering and does so with an Arm CPU-and-HBM design rather than GPUs. That makes the result relevant not only to national ranking leadership but to the architecture mix behind top-end systems.
