Valve says the Steam Machine, its living room Linux PC, costs $1,049 for 512GB without a controller to $1,428 for 2TB with a controller, available from June 29
You can register your interest starting today, and the first emails letting people buy one will go out on June 29th.

Context & Ripple Effects
Valve is returning to the living-room PC category after its earlier Steam Machine effort, but this time alongside the much more established Steam ecosystem and the company’s Steam Deck hardware line. The launch also follows Valve’s recent Steam Deck OLED price increases, which it attributed to higher memory and storage costs.
Related reviews describe the new device as compact and capable on a TV, while flagging its high price and need for manual configuration. That makes the June 29 buying rollout a test of whether a console-shaped Linux PC can attract users despite the remaining PC-like setup burden.
First-order effects
- Valve will begin allocating purchase access to registered buyers from June 29, with the Steam Machine positioned at $1,049 for 512GB without a controller and up to $1,428 for 2TB with one.
- Prospective buyers must weigh a higher entry price and separately priced controller against a small, TV-oriented PC that runs their Steam games.
Second-order effects
- The price and configuration requirements sharpen the product’s comparison with both conventional consoles and self-built or prebuilt gaming PCs, rather than making it a straightforward mass-market console substitute.
- Storage becomes a more visible purchasing variable: the substantial gap between the base and 2TB configurations reinforces the pressure that higher memory and storage costs are already placing on Valve’s hardware pricing.
Third-order effects
- If Valve can reduce the setup friction over time, the Steam Machine could extend SteamOS from handhelds into a broader hardware layer for living-room PCs; if not, the category is likely to remain oriented toward enthusiasts willing to configure a PC.
- The launch is another test of whether Valve can use its Steam user base to sustain hardware that is differentiated by software integration rather than by console-style price simplicity.
The trend: Valve is broadening SteamOS-based hardware beyond the Steam Deck, testing whether its PC distribution platform can support more purpose-built consumer devices despite component-cost and usability constraints.

One issue with the going back to the console strategy that both Xbox (exclusives) and Sony (No PC) are exploring is that next generation consoles are going to be priced similarly to this. Last gen (PS4/XB1) consoles already had an extended life, and PS5/XBS will too.
