OpenAI adds support for Google's SynthID watermarks in AI images, and previews a public portal to let users verify if an image was generated by OpenAI's tools

Google introduced SynthID for Imagen-made images and later extended the watermarking-and-detection approach to text. OpenAI had previously pointed to C2PA metadata for DALL-E 3 while acknowledging that such metadata can be removed.

This matters because OpenAI is pairing a Google-originated watermark signal with a direct verification route for its own outputs. The related coverage also shows why neither measure should be treated as conclusive: researchers have demonstrated both watermark removal and false watermark insertion.

  • OpenAI-generated images can carry SynthID support, giving users and downstream services an additional provenance signal beyond the C2PA metadata OpenAI previously discussed.

  • If major model providers adopt each other’s provenance systems, AI-image attribution could move toward a more interoperable, multi-signal layer spanning watermarks, metadata, and provider-operated verification services.
  • The same record points to a durable limitation: provenance tooling may improve disclosure of model outputs without solving the broader problem of proving that an image is real or unmanipulated.

The trend: Generative-AI providers are moving from optional output labels toward cross-provider provenance and public verification infrastructure, while technical fragility keeps those systems from becoming a standalone truth test.
