Amazon is replacing its Rufus AI shopping assistant with Alexa for Shopping, which is powered by Alexa+, on Amazon.com and its app, for all customers in the US

The Verge Jennifer Pattison Tuohy

Context & Ripple Effects

Rufus moved from a limited US beta in early 2024 to broad availability in Amazon’s mobile app later that year, but related coverage also characterized its recommendations as weak. Amazon subsequently tested sponsored prompts in Rufus, which reportedly drew less traffic than traditional ads while costing less.

The replacement folds the shopping experience into Amazon’s Alexa+ effort across Amazon.com and the app, rather than maintaining Rufus as a separate customer-facing assistant. It also extends Amazon’s longer-running effort to make Alexa useful for commerce, including shopping through skills.

First-order effects

  • US Amazon shoppers will encounter Alexa for Shopping, powered by Alexa+, in place of the standalone Rufus assistant on the website and app.
  • Amazon shifts the customer-facing ownership of AI shopping from the Rufus product name to Alexa+, making Alexa the interface through which its shopping-assistant work is presented.

Second-order effects

  • Any Rufus-specific sponsored-prompt approach must be adapted to the Alexa for Shopping experience; its previously reported lower traffic than traditional ads raises the stakes for how Amazon integrates monetization without degrading shopping utility.
  • The change gives Amazon a single Alexa-branded surface across shopping channels, concentrating product feedback and iteration around Alexa+ rather than splitting it between separate assistant brands.

Third-order effects

  • If Amazon continues consolidating AI features under Alexa+, retail assistants may increasingly be treated as extensions of broader agent platforms rather than standalone shopping-search products.
  • The durable test is whether a unified assistant can improve shopping usefulness enough to support commercial formats that have so far underperformed traditional Amazon ads on traffic.

The trend: Amazon is consolidating narrowly branded generative-AI features into a broader Alexa+ platform that can span commerce and more complex tasks.

Still weird this was ever a different brand/product when shopping is core, but I guess let Amazon experiment a bit more?  From 2+ years ago when Rufus rolled out: spyglass.org/alexa-rufus-...  [embedded post]
