Google updates AI Mode and AI Overviews to add “a preview of perspectives” from firsthand sources like social media and Reddit, presented as “Expert Advice”

The new AI Mode and AI Overviews updates bring in perspectives from firsthand sources like social media and web forums.

The Verge Jess Weatherbed

Context & Ripple Effects

Google had already separated firsthand material into a Perspectives tab and then expanded Search with experimental AI Mode. This update brings those two directions together by placing selected social and forum viewpoints inside AI-generated search experiences rather than leaving them in a separate results surface.

The change also follows Google’s earlier corrections to AI Overviews after flawed answers, including tighter handling of nonsensical queries and satire. Labeling these excerpts as “Expert Advice” makes source selection and presentation a higher-stakes part of the product.

First-order effects

  • AI Mode and AI Overviews gain a dedicated preview layer for firsthand perspectives from sources such as social media and Reddit, giving those sources more visible placement within Google’s AI answers.
  • Google must apply its content policies and quality controls not only to generated summaries but also to the social and forum material elevated alongside them.

Second-order effects

  • Forum and social platforms whose posts are selected can become more important discovery inputs for searches where lived experience is useful, while publishers and other sources compete with a more blended answer format for attention.
  • The prominent “Expert Advice” framing raises pressure on Google to distinguish credible firsthand accounts from low-quality, satirical, or manipulative posts—an issue made more salient by its prior AI Overview fixes.

Third-order effects

  • If this format expands, search results may increasingly operate as curated synthesis products that combine web information with community testimony, reducing the separation between conventional ranking and AI answer generation.
  • The durable constraint will be governance: the more Google treats user-generated posts as advice within answers, the more its selection, attribution, and moderation decisions shape what users regard as authoritative.

The trend: This is part of search’s shift from link-led retrieval toward AI-mediated answers that assemble information and human perspectives in the same interface.
