Sources: DeepSeek is in talks to raise funds, and the Big Fund, China's biggest state-backed chip fund, is seeking to lead the investment at a ~$45B valuation
Value soars in ongoing fundraising discussions as investors including Tencent seek slice of AI lab
Financial Times
Context & Ripple Effects
DeepSeek’s reported move from seeking outside capital at a much lower threshold in April to multibillion-dollar fundraising discussions in May marks a rapid institutionalization of the AI lab. The related coverage ties that financing to infrastructure build-out, with Tencent among the interested investors.
A prospective lead role for the Big Fund would add a state-backed chip-financing institution to a round already drawing major private-sector interest. Later reports of a completed large round and subsequent fundraising talks suggest this was an early step in an accelerating capital-raising cycle.
First-order effects
DeepSeek gains a potential source of large-scale funding and a prominent prospective lead investor as it seeks capital for infrastructure expansion.
The Big Fund and Tencent would obtain potential strategic exposure to a fast-growing Chinese AI developer, though the investment remained under discussion at this point.
Second-order effects
A state-backed lead investor could make DeepSeek a more consequential customer and partner for China’s domestic AI-computing and chip ecosystem as it deploys infrastructure capital.
Other Chinese AI labs may face stronger pressure to secure both strategic investors and compute capacity, rather than rely on smaller venture-style rounds.
Third-order effects
If state-backed semiconductor capital increasingly flows directly into model developers, the boundary between AI-software financing and chip-industrial policy could narrow.
The pattern points toward Chinese frontier-AI competition being shaped as much by access to concentrated infrastructure financing as by model development; the eventual allocation of capital and compute remains uncertain.
The trend: This is one data point in the convergence of state-backed semiconductor investment, private-platform capital, and infrastructure-heavy funding for Chinese AI labs.
id be surprised if tencent ends up investing. presumably theyre “still in talks” because they want to negotiate wenfeng's terms. lets see who budges first
FT: DeepSeek is in talks for its first fundraising round at a valuation of around $45 billion. FT: China's largest state-backed semiconductor investment fund, which has invested in YMTC and CXMT, is in talks to lead DeepSeek's fundraising round. [image]
Reasonable. DeepSeek is, fundamentally, a semiconductor project as well, most just don't see it yet. By the way, CXMT & YMTC were once put on Pentagon's Section 1260H (seem removed now). The problem will be utilizing this capital, because they sure ain't getting any Hoppers.
Scoop: DeepSeek nears $45bn valuation as China's ‘Big Fund’ leads investment talks * Valuation surges vs initial $20+bn * Liang could personally invest * Investors are betting on commercialisation potential ie strong coding despite lack of biz model https://www.ft.com/...
Wait, whoa, I didn't know! According to FT, Chen Deli holds ≈2.5% of DeepSeek! I missed it because I've never seen the «Chen Zhe» (陈哲 vs 陈德里) variant. This explains a lot, eg why he gets to vaguepost on XHS about the upcoming roleplay support, and speak for their policy. [image]
FT published this ownership diagram for DeepSeek, whose valuation is said to near $50B recent fundraising negotiations. I asked DS v4 who these people are: Based on the ownership structure diagram you shared, the four individuals—Liang Wenfeng, Chen Zhe, Li Huan, and Zheng [image…
