Uber partners with Expedia to launch a hotel booking integration in its app in the US, and plans to add Expedia's Vrbo brand later in 2026

Bloomberg Natalie Lung

Context & Ripple Effects

Uber has been building travel-related services inside its app for several years: it introduced flight booking in the UK through Hopper, outlined plans for trains, coaches and flights, and expanded its Explore tab beyond rides. The Expedia arrangement extends that strategy into US lodging rather than requiring Uber to assemble hotel inventory itself.

The partnership also follows reporting that Uber had considered a much larger route into travel through a possible Expedia acquisition. Working with Expedia instead gives Uber a distribution and product-integration path, while a planned Vrbo addition broadens the lodging mix beyond hotels.

First-order effects

  • Uber users in the US can book Expedia hotel inventory within Uber’s app, adding lodging to Uber’s in-app travel journey.
  • Expedia gains a new consumer-distribution surface through Uber; Vrbo is positioned to join that integration later in 2026.

Second-order effects

  • Uber can connect hotel booking with its existing transport use cases, potentially increasing the value of keeping trip planning and local mobility in one app.
  • The deal makes Expedia a more important travel-content partner for Uber, reducing the need for Uber to directly build lodging supply while concentrating the customer interface in Uber’s app.

Third-order effects

  • If Uber continues adding travel categories through partners, its app could evolve from a point-to-point mobility service into a broader trip-management layer, with partners providing inventory behind the interface.
  • That model would shift competition toward control of demand, user data and cross-category discovery rather than ownership of every travel product; its durability depends on whether integrations create repeat usage rather than isolated bookings.

The trend: This is part of the platformization of travel, in which consumer apps bundle mobility, lodging and other trip services through partnerships to own more of the customer journey.

Don't really see the connection here. Hotel and Uber rides are completely separate. Maybe I'd book a private ride but Uber isn't great at scheduled rides.

The reality is, @Uber is *already* a huge part of our customers travel experiences Last year, more than 100 million customers used us to go to/from airports. 1.5 billion (!) rides took place outside a rider's home city. And airports represent >15% of our mobility GB People

At a time when ChatGPT and Claude vie to be an everything app for productivity and leisure, Uber is investing into improving its own app: -updated search bar that can interpret natural language and more flexibly show rides and takeout options, rather than defaulting to ride

Uber added hotels to its app last week. 700,000+ properties, powered by Expedia. here's what this move signals about where Uber is actually headed: [image]
