@GoogleDeepMind @sundarpichai of course it's still a minority of even DeepMind employees who are willing to take the risk of disagreeing with management. Back in 2018, the anti-Maven protest was joined by thousands of Googlers

@GoogleDeepMind @sundarpichai this is the loudest Google workers have been opposing the company for a long time. The protests against its work with Israel didn't attract these kinds of numbers, this issue has a lot broader support inside the company

SCOOP: Google has signed a deal with the Pentagon to allow the use of its AI for “any lawful government purpose.” Google's agreement also requires it to assist in adjusting its AI safety settings and filters at the government's request. [image]

This deal came despite substantial employee opposition — 600+ employees signed a letter today asking Sundar Pichai to reject the agreement. As always, I want to talk to people on all sides of the situation. You can reach me at erinkwoo.07 on Signal. https://x.com/...

I spent the last 2 months trying to prevent this. If OpenAI offered a fig leaf, Google said “imagine we offered a fig leaf.” Google affirms it can't veto usage, commits to modify safety filters at government request, & aspirational language with no legal restrictions. Shameful. […

www.bloomberg.com/news/article... unclear if this is evidence worker pressure works or something else tipped the scales here but if it was the former honestly surprised and impressed that still means something at Google
