Sources: Tencent and Alibaba are in talks to invest in DeepSeek at a $20B+ valuation, partly benchmarked against Moonshot's pending round at an $18B valuation

Chinese tech giants Tencent Holdings and Alibaba Group are in talks to invest in DeepSeek, the AI upstart that recently started fundraising …

The Information

Context & Ripple Effects

Earlier coverage described Alibaba and other prospective backers approaching DeepSeek after its rise, while CEO Liang Wenfeng was reportedly cautious about outside funding. This report marks a shift from preliminary interest toward negotiations involving two major platform companies.

Subsequent coverage places the talks within a rapidly escalating financing process: DeepSeek was later reported to be discussing larger rounds and infrastructure build-out, while Moonshot remained a visible private-market valuation reference point.

First-order effects

  • DeepSeek gains a credible near-term valuation benchmark above Moonshot's reported pending-round level, even though the Tencent and Alibaba investments remain under discussion rather than completed.
  • Tencent and Alibaba are positioned as potential strategic financiers of DeepSeek, tying the startup's fundraising more closely to China's incumbent internet platforms.

Second-order effects

  • Moonshot's reported $18B round becomes a direct comparison point in competition for capital, raising pressure on leading Chinese AI labs to demonstrate why their valuations and funding needs differ.
  • If negotiations progress, DeepSeek would have a stronger base for funding the infrastructure expansion cited in later coverage, while investors may need to distinguish financial exposure from strategic access to the company.

Third-order effects

  • The pattern points to frontier-model funding concentrating among a small number of highly valued labs and the large platforms or public-backed pools able to finance them.
  • As capital requirements rise, AI-lab valuations may increasingly be set by access to infrastructure funding and strategic sponsors, not solely by conventional startup fundraising comparables.

The trend: Chinese frontier-AI competition is moving toward capital-intensive, strategically sponsored financing rounds in which model labs, platforms, and state-linked capital increasingly converge.

There is a yawning chasm between Chinese AI valuations and US: $20b for DeepSeek would be 1/42.6 of OpenAI's $852b and ~similar for Anthropic. Also interestingly for all the attention DeepSeek got here, they seem to be far less valuable than other labs in CN including Minimax

DeepSeek has been in the crosshair of China-U.S. tensions. This would make any U.S. investor think twice about investing, and make Chinese tech heavyweights and state-backed funds ideal candidates for the hotly saught after round.
