Google updates AI Mode in Chrome, letting users open links side by side with AI Mode on desktop; Chrome desktop and mobile users can now also search across tabs

Google announced on Thursday that it's rolling out a new way to explore the web with AI Mode, its conversational search experience.

TechCrunch Aisha Malik

Context & Ripple Effects

Google has been progressively embedding AI Mode into Chrome: earlier coverage documented Lens, natural-language history search, video and document inputs, and planning features. A homepage-button test also showed Google moving the product closer to the core search entry point.

This update extends that trajectory from answering queries to working across the browser’s existing research context. It matters because Chrome becomes a distribution surface for AI Mode rather than merely a destination reached through Search.

First-order effects

  • Chrome users can keep AI Mode visible while opening web results, and can ask Chrome to search across multiple open tabs on desktop and mobile.
  • Google gains a tighter link between its conversational search product and browser-based browsing workflows.

Second-order effects

  • Publishers and other linked destinations may receive visits in a more AI-mediated browsing flow, where users can inspect source pages alongside an AI interface rather than choosing between a result page and a chat response.
  • Browser and search rivals face greater pressure to make AI useful against live page and tab context, not just as a separate assistant or search feature.

Third-order effects

  • If these features continue to accumulate, the browser can become an AI work surface that organizes research, retrieval, and navigation around persistent user context.
  • The coexistence of AI Mode and opened links may become an important design boundary: it can preserve access to the open web while giving Google more control over how discovery and referral occur.

The trend: This is part of the shift from standalone AI search answers toward browsers that act as context-aware, assistant-led workspaces.
