Xbox staff memo: Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma says “Game Pass has become too expensive for players” and that Microsoft needs “a better value equation”

Microsoft is getting ready to address Game Pass pricing concerns. … Microsoft's new Xbox chief, Asha Sharma

The Verge Tom Warren

Context & Ripple Effects

The value review follows a sequence of Game Pass price increases, including the 2024 Ultimate increase and a planned lower-priced tier without day-one releases. It also arrives as Microsoft broadens cloud-gaming access beyond its highest subscription tier, making the service’s tier boundaries more consequential.

The underlying tension is not simply price: related coverage indicates that placing major titles in Game Pass can displace higher-margin game sales. Microsoft is therefore revisiting how much content and access each tier can economically support.

First-order effects

  • Microsoft Gaming must reassess Game Pass tier pricing, benefits, or both; subscribers are the immediate beneficiaries if the company restores a clearer value proposition.
  • Xbox’s content and subscription teams face a sharper trade-off between using day-one releases to attract and retain members and preserving standalone game revenue.

Second-order effects

  • A lower entry price or more differentiated tiers would put pressure on rival game subscriptions to justify their own catalog depth, cloud access, and release-window policies.
  • If Microsoft limits premium releases or features to protect margins, players may compare Game Pass more directly with buying individual games, affecting conversion between subscription tiers and full-price sales.

Third-order effects

  • The episode points to a subscription-growth gap in games: as services mature, publishers may need to optimize tiers and content windows for profitability rather than rely on ever-richer bundles to drive adoption.
  • If this pattern persists, game subscriptions are likely to move toward more explicit segmentation of cloud access and new-release access, with the console-to-service flywheel depending on sustainable content economics rather than low headline prices alone.

The trend: Game subscriptions are shifting from expansion-led bundling toward profitability-led tier design, balancing recurring revenue against the opportunity cost of including premium releases.

This means the Game Pass subs dropped in a big way following the last big price hike. Im expecting: 1. Xbox 1P only tier 2. COD being removed

More flexible, you say? Interesting phrase!

From the CEO herself, Xbox Game Pass is too expensive and no longer provides value Good to see her actively looking at ways to improve the service and make it more affordable for consumers

Truth be told, while I do love third party games day-one, I care far more for Xbox Studios (which is still a large selection) If the Premium tier pivoted to just that (without CoD) that would still be fine with me.

You're not ready to hear what she actually means by “more flexible”.
