Anthropic says Claude subscriptions will no longer cover usage on third-party tools like OpenClaw starting April 4 at 12pm PT, to better manage capacity

Claude subscriptions will no longer cover third-party access from tools like OpenClaw starting Saturday, April 4th.

woke up and my mentions are full of these Both me and @davemorin tried to talk sense into Anthropic, best we managed was delaying this for a week. Funny how timings match up, first they copy some popular features into their closed harness, then they lock out open source.
  • @bcherny Boris Cherny on x
Starting tomorrow at 12pm PT, Claude subscriptions will no longer cover usage on third-party tools like OpenClaw. You can still use these tools with your Claude login via extra usage bundles (now available at a discount), or with a Claude API key.

ANTHROPIC HAS OFFICIALLY BANNED OPENCLAW USAGE!!! no this is not ai-generated Starting April 4, users will no longer be able to use their Claude Subscriptions for third-party harnesses including OpenClaw. THIS IS CRAZY. 👇 [image]
  • @bcherny Boris Cherny on x
We've been working hard to meet the increase in demand for Claude, and our subscriptions weren't built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools. Capacity is a resource we manage thoughtfully and we are prioritizing our customers using our products and API.
  • @trace_cohen Trace Cohen on x
I can't imagine their scaling issues... Token use must be 🚀 and we all got amazing subsidized Ai for a few months. I can't believe we already went through the Ai VC subsidized time already.

@bcherny Subs can still be used for personal local tools that use or wrap the Claude harness like Claude Code and Claude Code headless and Agent SDK, right?

And there it is Bye bye Claude
  • @_vgnsh Vignesh on x
This is perfectly in line with their TOS and not an unreasonable measure to control capacity. The credit to ease off is also nice :) API unfortunately is a bit too cost prohibitive for daily usage with 3p harnesses. Claude code is solid though. Should also see fewer capacity
  • @altryne Alex Volkov on x
Welp, this seems like game over! Anthropic jut mass mailed everyone who used @openclaw and said Game Over! If you'd like to use OpenClaw with your Max account, turn on “extra credits”. They are offering a 1 time credit for the amount of the max subscription! [image]

This was actually already policy. Regardless, destroying demand was coming with undercapacity and increasing verticalization/integration is the right move. Perfect move in fact, despite people being understandably mad.

i switched to glm-5 for my claws and hermes agents. it's almost sota, better multi-modal than opus, 100x cheaper, and z_ai folks are always giving out free credits to the community. love deepseek, kimi, minimax, mimo. opus is great for coding, but for most use cases, the chinese

Claude is cutting off apps like OpenClaw from using Claude subscriptions. I read somewhere that a $200/month Claude plan can use up to $5,000 in compute, so it's heavily subsidized. Given Claude's uptime issues, this might be the right move under current Anthropic GPU [image]
  • @bcherny Boris Cherny on x
Subscribers get a one-time credit equal to your monthly plan cost. If you need more, you can now buy discounted usage bundles. To request a full refund, look for a link in your email tomorrow. https://support.claude.com/...

The nickel and dime era of AI is here. Can't wait until people have to start paying the real cost. “What do you mean the base plan is $200 a month and I have to purchase add-ons for everything?”

so $200 of extra usage must be that minimal compared to what you get from a $200 sub I don't understand the business decision to reduce strain if that isn't true - how do you have a deal for 30% off extra usage if you aren't making huge margins off that?

entirely expected and makes sense under their ToS. Codex, OpenCode Zen, MiniMax, https://z.ai/. You have many options.
  • @krishnanrohit Rohit on x
Can't openclaw also use claude code sdk if someone wanted to?
  • @thsottiaux Tibo on x
From the surge in demand on Codex and many other services, it is clear that AI companies are going to go through a phase of demand outpacing supply. Two things will be most important, having the most capacity and having the most efficient models. I believe we have both.

  • @aakashgupta Aakash Gupta on x
The $20/month all-you-can-eat buffet just closed. A single OpenClaw agent running for one day burns $1,000 to $5,000 in API-equivalent costs. On a $200 Max subscription. Anthropic was eating that difference on every user who routed through a third-party harness. The timeline

@bcherny I love you guys, and Claude is amazing, but this low-key sucks. I understand Claude co-work is your solution to OpenClaw, so why would you want to directly fuel your competition? I really do get that, but this decision is actually going to actively hurt a lot of people. …
  • @steipete Peter Steinberger on x
While I think what Anthropic does is sad for the ecosystem, I wanna give Boris credit for doing what he can to soften the fallout. Today's release will include some fixes for better cache use, to lower cost for API users.
  • @bcherny Boris Cherny on x
@jaredctate We're big fans of open source. I actually just put up a few PRs to improve prompt cache efficiency for OpenClaw specifically. This is more about engineering constraints. Our systems are highly optimized for one kind of workload, and to serve as many people as possible…

It's over. Anthropic just banned OpenClaw. Uncensored thoughts: 1. Massive mistake that will come back to bite them 2. Open source needs to win. If you have a local model running on your Mac mini, no corporation will ever be able to ban you 3. ChatGPT 5.4 is the best model.

let me get this straight: >you sell a model >someone builds real infrastructure on it >it works so well you can't handle the load >so you email your entire user base blaming the builder >then offer him the door you didn't just lose a power user, you just told every dev

Anthropic just sent an email saying that you can no longer run 3rd party harnesses like OpenClaw using Claude subscriptions. Right now, both OpenAI and Anthropic are losing money on power users who run multiple agents 24/7 using their $100-200 subscription plans. This reminds
