OpenAI shelves its erotic chatbot “indefinitely” as it refocuses on its core products, sources say after technical issues as well as staff and investor concerns

Decision follows staff and investor concerns about sexual AI content  —  OpenAI has shelved plans to release an erotic chatbot …

Financial Times

Context & Ripple Effects

OpenAI had moved from a 2024 discussion of allowing NSFW generation in age-appropriate settings to a public debate over erotica for verified adults. The proposed adult-mode launch was then delayed in favor of higher-priority intelligence work.

The hold follows a sharper internal governance test: OpenAI's advisory council reportedly objected to the planned adult mode, alongside technical difficulties. That makes the decision more than a product-timing change; it narrows a previously signaled consumer-content expansion.

First-order effects

  • OpenAI will not introduce the erotic chatbot on the contemplated timetable, redirecting product attention toward its stated core priorities.
  • Staff, investors and the advisory structures that raised concerns gain a practical veto point over a sensitive ChatGPT use case; the earlier advisory-council backlash is now reflected in product direction.

Second-order effects

  • OpenAI’s consumer roadmap loses a potential premium-engagement feature, while its teams must resolve the technical and policy conditions that made an adult-mode launch difficult.
  • Rivals considering sexual or companion-style AI can read the episode as evidence that product capability alone does not settle deployment: internal acceptance and investor tolerance can constrain release plans.

Third-order effects

  • If similar pauses persist, AI companions and sexual-content features may develop under more formal governance, age-assurance and brand-risk constraints than general-purpose chat products.
  • The episode reinforces a split between experimentation with permissive content policies and commercial AI platforms’ need to prioritize broadly acceptable, core products; the eventual balance remains unsettled.

The trend: Consumer AI is shifting from broad capability expansion toward governed deployment, especially where intimate content creates technical, workforce and capital-provider risk.

real question: what products that OpenAI has shipped over the past, lets say three years, still exist today or are continuing to be actively developed and prioritized? in my mind the company is now basically ChatGPT, model development and Codex. but tell me what im missing

Any chatbot can be erotic if you're horny enough.

The FT is reporting that OpenAI's ‘adult mode’ Chat has also been dropped as a side-quest along with Sora, and has been shelved indefinitely. This was very close to release. They appear to be focusing everything on the new model, which will arrive in about two weeks.
