  i appreciate this attempt to get at the international dimension of this, but a couple thoughts (beyond the political viability): 1) what constitutes “ai safety legislation”? china, saudi arabia, the EU all have ai governance frameworks. will be interested to see how they define

  a) it won't pass b) what are the likely downstream effects here? blue states / localities propose similar regulations, shifting more data centers to red states and countries with worse carbon emissions and labor standards. we should simply regulate ai itself.

  people can certainly take issue with his positions and plan of action, but sanders seems to be one of the few members of congress seriously reckoning with what the labor consequences of the coming AI age could be (now joined AOC)

  this seems unworkable even on narrow safety merits, but political dynamics are such that it might still become the most salient version of the ‘safetyist’ position. that'd mean it further poisons the politics both for bipartisan convergence and moderate leadership on the issue.

  Sanders and AOC should be removed from office for this. It's treason or stupidity or political pandering amounting to treason. May as well attach a rider to this bill paying for every American to have a free Duolingo Mandarin subscription because we'll all need to get fluent.
