Sources: Amazon's ZeroOne unit is developing “Transformer”, a phone that syncs with Alexa; it would be Amazon's second smartphone, after the Fire Phone in 2014
In 2014, Amazon (AMZN.O) introduced its first smartphone, hoping to take on Apple and Samsung.

Context & Ripple Effects
Amazon’s reported phone effort follows the creation of ZeroOne, a team tasked with breakthrough consumer products. It also extends a long-running effort to make Alexa available across communications and personal hardware, from Alexa calling and messaging to Alexa-enabled wireless earbuds.
The significance is not a confirmed return to the handset market, but the possibility that Amazon is testing whether a phone can become a more central Alexa touchpoint after its earlier Fire Phone attempt.
First-order effects
- ZeroOne would take on the costly work of developing handset hardware and an Alexa-linked software experience; the report indicates development, not a product launch or availability.
- Alexa would gain a prospective always-carried endpoint, potentially connecting Amazon’s existing voice, messaging and device experiences more tightly than stand-alone home hardware can.
Second-order effects
- If the program progresses, Amazon will need to differentiate the device against Apple and Samsung through the Alexa integration rather than merely entering an established handset category.
- A phone could make Amazon’s Alexa-connected devices more complementary: calling, messaging and earbud experiences would have a potential mobile hub rather than operating as separate endpoints.
Third-order effects
- The effort points to a broader contest over who owns the primary interface for AI- and voice-driven actions: the assistant provider, the phone platform, or the device maker.
- Whether Amazon can sustain such a strategy remains uncertain; a second handset attempt would test whether proprietary hardware can expand Alexa’s action surface after an earlier phone did not establish a lasting position.
The trend: Consumer platforms are seeking to turn AI assistants from feature-level services into persistent, cross-device interfaces for everyday actions.

With his close ties to the Presidency, I can absolutely see Bezos getting a lucrative no bid contract to supply phones to the Federal government. [embedded post]

I recall doing the calculations on installed base for the Fire Phone, and they were terrible. Amazon took a giant writedown on it. Maybe everyone's forgotten it 12 years later. https://www.theguardian.com/ ...

Amazon exploring a smartphone at this stage raises more questions than answers: the market is contracting, there's a memory shortage driving costs up, and differentiation in a mature category dominated by Apple, Samsung, and Chinese OEMs is nearly impossible. If this is a [image]

The contacts app requires you to create an IAM policy before you can look up your mother's phone number. Don't forget to enable MFA or the phone dials a random person in Ohio instead. This is a feature, not a bug.

To make a phone call, you first select your Region. Calls from us-east-1 are free; everywhere else incurs a $0.02/minute surcharge plus a per-second “voice packet egress fee” that doesn't appear on your bill for 47 days.

The home screen has 437 app icons, each with a slightly different design language. 12 of them do the same thing. 3 are deprecated but can't be removed. One is just called “Amazon Basics Phone” and it's a worse version of the dialer that already ships with the phone.

Amazon is reportedly working on a new smartphone codenamed “Transformer.” This is being designed by the same people who brought us the @awscloud Management Console, and I have never been more terrified by a consumer electronics product in my life. A thread...

Amazon is getting back into smartphones? That sounds like a really stupid idea. Wouldn't it make much more sense to just acquire a Chinese brand instead of starting from scratch? [image]
