We've entered into an agreement to join OpenAI as part of the Codex team. I'm incredibly proud of the work we've done so far, incredibly grateful to everyone that's supported us, and incredibly excited to keep building tools that make programming feel different.

After the deal closes, OpenAI will continue supporting our open source tools, and we'll keep building in the open — for the Python ecosystem — just as we have from the start.

My beloved uv, AI companies are eating and polarizing everything. I don't know if this is good or bad in the long run, time will tell.

We've reached an agreement to acquire Astral. After we close, OpenAI plans for @astral_sh to join our Codex team, with a continued focus on building great tools and advancing the shared mission of making developers more productive. https://openai.com/...

UNBELIEVABLY excited about the Astral team joining OpenAI! We've long looked up to the work that @charliermarsh and his incredible team has done with ruff, uv, ty - can't believe we'll get to work together!

if you own an entire software ecosystem distribution channel, it means that you own the means for shipping novel codelang forks. recent moves from oai & ant here for uv & bun are incredible vertical unlocks to language+ai codesign.

Astral made using Python fun and easy. Their ability to write high performance Rust tooling will be a huge asset to the Codex team!

Shit. What will happen to ‘uv’ now that [Open]AI owns it?
  • @hsvsphere @hsvsphere on x
No promise to not change uv/etc to suit OpenAI's sloppy requests. It may be over, hope it isn't. Confirms my suspicion about the Deno acquisition too, they want both runtimes/ecosystems.

And another reason why Python packaging needs to gets fixed upstream.  You can't have the languages package management be treated as a thing to be implemented by third parties.  —  Please CPython, finally learn from node and Rust on how to do this properly.  —  astral.sh/blog/ope…
