The immediate scope remains somewhat qualified: a subsequent statement said VR support would remain for existing games. That distinction makes Horizon Worlds’ social destination less central to Quest while preserving a narrower VR role for game experiences.
First-order effects
Quest users lose headset access to Horizon Worlds on June 15, while Horizon Worlds remains available through Meta Horizon’s mobile app.
Meta shifts the principal access point for its virtual-world destination from Quest hardware to mobile, with VR retained only where existing games are concerned.
Second-order effects
Worlds creators and users must orient distribution, discovery, and social activity around the mobile app rather than Quest-based access.
Meta can concentrate Worlds product decisions on the mobile audience it identified as necessary to compete with Roblox and Fortnite, while Quest content becomes more game-specific.
Third-order effects
If Meta maintains this split, Quest’s strategic role narrows from a general-purpose social-world gateway toward a gaming-focused VR platform, while Worlds becomes a cross-device mobile service.
The change illustrates a broader retrenchment from headset-exclusive metaverse experiences: immersive hardware may support specialized content, but mass-market virtual spaces increasingly need lower-friction mobile distribution.
The trend: Meta’s move is part of a shift from headset-led virtual worlds toward mobile-first social platforms, with VR increasingly reserved for differentiated game experiences.
People have long bemoaned the existence of Worlds on headsets so this will overall likely be seen as a positive, but I think killing the Events Arena in particular is a misstep. There were a lot of neat things they could have done wrt. concerts and such.
Horizon Worlds is officially being discontinued on Meta Quest headsets. You will no longer be able to access Horizon Worlds at all on the headset and unfortunately Hyperspace co-op rooms are going away as well which is a real travesty. This is both exciting and sad honestly. Sad …
Meta is set off to kill Horizon Worlds (including Arena/Central) for Meta Quest headsets, along with the ability to view Hyperscape captures within Worlds. [image]
Horizon Worlds is now phone-only. Do you understand what that means? Mark Zuckerberg burned through investor money like jet fuel, rebranded a company with 3 billion users, and delivered a product SO worthless it can't justify existing on the hardware they literally manufacture.…
Very funny that there is a theory out there that says Silicon Valley would build us a utopian society if only we would cut enough red tape to allow them to.
“Hey, you bought this specialized hardware and all, but it's better for us if you just access it on your phones.” — lol — cc @timmaughan.bsky.social [embedded post]
