Uber is relaunching a robotaxi service with Hyundai-backed Motional in Las Vegas; the service will have a safety driver behind the wheel until the end of 2026

Uber and Motional have worked together before: Uber planned a driverless-delivery pilot with Motional in Santa Monica in 2021. The Las Vegas return shows that partnership moving back into passenger service, but with a more controlled operating model.

The safety-driver requirement also marks a different stage of deployment from Uber's fully driverless WeRide service in Abu Dhabi. Within Uber's network, autonomy is being introduced through partners at different readiness levels rather than through a single uniform rollout.
