Honestly with the impending launch of @SpaceX money @elonmusk should just buy PayPal Amusingly the market cap today is... $44bn Would be kinda poetic given history

What the hell problem will this solve for Stripe; they're fantastic and Paypal is... not. Stripe: “Look, we can either invest years learning to be absolute dogshit at talking to customers and resolving their problems, or we can hire a company who's already mastered it.”

so... who's buying Paypal? It has the potential of being one of the great distressed value opportunities in fintech history. Down ~85%, still generating $5.5B in FCF, 400M consumer accounts with bank info, checkout buttons on millions of merchant sites, and a peer-to-peer brand […

it'd be so poetic if elon buys paypal, strips it down to the bones just like twitter, & integrates back into x (his original vision which he got fired for). in another life, i'd love to be ceo of x pay, there is so much potential god damn.

Ok as soon as I post that it's a nonstarter for Stripe, it comes out that Stripe is considering it. It really makes a ton of sense if you look at the business components. Worth a lot to Stripe to own it but there will be an immense amount of tech debt https://www.bloomberg.com/..…

Stripe buying PayPal would be truly full circle. Elon and Peter Thiel invested in Stripe in 2011 (a $2m round at $20m valuation). TechCrunch headline: “Stealth Payment Startup Stripe Backed By PayPal Founders” [image]

So many great 100B to $500b companies should consider a PayPal merger/purchase at this point: Uber, Robinhood, Coinbase, Stripe, etc. MAG7 would probably not bother for fear of antitrust And as odd as it seems, AI companies having a payment layer would be extremely

PayPal had the opportunity to build Apple Pay before Apple, Affirm before Affirm, Cash App before Block, and Stripe before (or at least in parallel with) Stripe. And now Stripe may acquire PayPal. Talk about fumbling the bag.

PayPal skyrockets +6% today on rumors stripe is looking to potentially acquire it It is now just 600% away from breaking even on Jim's buy recommendation [image]

Two of the worst companies I've had to deal with.  Stripe doesn't care if your use case doesn't fit the exact shape of their APIs but will gladly sell you more APIs for the bare minimum (tax, fraud protection).  Pushes Link, which confuses customers.  PayPal, well, everyone knows…

This would be both a) fantastic because I wouldn't need separate PayPal and Stripe integrations anymore but also b) awful because I'd be way too dependent on one company [embedded post]

I can't wait to calculate how much of the global GDP runs on @PayPal after they get acquired by @stripe [image]

Sidenote: PayPal employs over 2x staff in Ireland (1,500) v Stripe (650). An acquisition would make Stripe one of largest tech employers in the state, a $200bn+ firm (most valuable in Irish history) Quite a journey for the Collisons

12:03 PT: I write a post about how Stripe acquiring PayPal is a non-starter because of tech and culture debt 12:40 PT: I am wrong [image]

Would be cool if @collision did a reverse merger where PayPal takes over Stripe so we can finally have a publicly traded Stripe and you don't have to go through the brain damage of an IPO roadshow.
