feels pretty clear the metaverse was actually just Roblox this whole time. Not Fortnite. Not VR.

It's great to see Meta listen (and agree) to the feedback from the VR community

Our 2026 VR State of the Union is out today. Based on customer data and developer feedback, we are removing individual Horizon Worlds from the Quest Store. This is just one of many improvements designed to drive revenue to VR apps this year. https://developers.meta.com/ ...

So happy for developers that this is finally happening. Meta using the Quest platform as a springboard for Horizon has done real damage to the ecosystem. With this new strategy I hope they can win back consumer trust, rebuild and become a thriving gaming platform once again.

The subtle implication is that Meta views (correctly or incorrectly, time will tell) VR as a stepping stone. [image]

This is a historical moment in VR development for developers and users. Meta's VR tests of Horizon Worlds is coming to and end. 3rd party applications are now the primary content shown to users. I welcome this change and look forward this new future!

Bit props to @Meta on making this move, and the wording in this article. It makes me hopeful for this winter, rebuilding with solid grounds

If Meta can next fix the store recommendation algorithm and search ranking system, we can collectively grow app sales significantly.

Huge news for all third party developers on Quest! They're not subsidizing first-party games to compete with us anymore, and we're no longer second-class citizens after worlds! Finally, the Quest platform is becoming a fairer and more open market.

For ages, I would tell players to download my game, and they would ask me, “Is it Balloon Bash? How do you spell it?” Because third-party developers were always second-class to Horizon Worlds, this world with 0 players always came before Balloon Bats. GOOD RIDDANCE. [image]

I honestly think this is the best case scenario #VR Devs were hoping for. The fact that Worlds is going ‘mobile first’ suggests to me that Meta aren't pulling out of VR at all, but rather creating a longer onboarding runway. Get them into Worlds first, then from that into VR.
