Meta says it is “explicitly separating” Quest VR from its Worlds platform, making Worlds “almost exclusively mobile”, letting it better compete with Roblox
Horizon Worlds is now going to be a platform that's ‘almost exclusively mobile.’
So happy for developers that this is finally happening. Meta using the Quest platform as a springboard for Horizon has done real damage to the ecosystem. With this new strategy I hope they can win back consumer trust, rebuild and become a thriving gaming platform once again.
This is a historical moment in VR development for developers and users. Meta's VR tests of Horizon Worlds is coming to and end. 3rd party applications are now the primary content shown to users. I welcome this change and look forward this new future!
Huge news for all third party developers on Quest! They're not subsidizing first-party games to compete with us anymore, and we're no longer second-class citizens after worlds! Finally, the Quest platform is becoming a fairer and more open market.
I honestly think this is the best case scenario #VR Devs were hoping for. The fact that Worlds is going ‘mobile first’ suggests to me that Meta aren't pulling out of VR at all, but rather creating a longer onboarding runway. Get them into Worlds first, then from that into VR.
