Anthropic is prepared to loosen its current terms of use, but wants to ensure its tools aren't used to spy on Americans en masse, or to develop weapons that fire with no human involvement. The Pentagon has aid, that Anthropic will “pay a price” for that behavior. Within this [ima…

lol what.  They seem to be the LLM vendor that has at least a tiny sliver of ethics, that's probably why.  [embedded post]

this has been leaking for a week in a very transparent way the government is upset one of its contractors is saying “we don't want you to use our tools to surveil US citizens without guardrails” more interesting to me is how all the other AI companies don't seem to care [image]

NEW: Pentagon is so furious with Anthropic for insisting on limiting use of AI for domestic surveillance + autonomous weapons they're threatening to label the company a “supply chain risk,” forcing vendors to cut ties. With @m_ccuri and @mikeallen https://www.axios.com/...

It concerns me that one of the two issues in the DOD vs Anthropic fight is “use for domestic surveillance”, with other articles being clear it's about use to track US citizens.  Why is this a DOD requirement? @wyden.senate.gov  —  www.axios.com/2026/02/15/c...

It's one thing to take a principled stand against working with the Pentagon (disagree, but I understand). It's another thing to want the “ethical” revenues but want to pick and choose the “unethical” ones.

OpenAI in particular should be defending Anthropic here given their Charter: “We commit to use any influence we obtain over AGI's deployment to ensure it is used for the benefit of all, and to avoid enabling uses of AI or AGI that harm humanity or unduly concentrate power.”
  • @hamandcheese Samuel Hammond on x
It's one thing to cancel a contract but to bar any contractor from using Anthropic's models would be an absurd act of industrial sabotage. It reaks of a competitor op.
  • @hamandcheese Samuel Hammond on x
This is upside-down and backwards. Anthropic has gone out of its way to anticipate AI's dual-use potential and position itself as a US-first, single loyalty company, using compartmentalization strategies to minimize insider threats while working arms-length with the IC.

The Trump-Vance admin is threatening to punish companies that will not go along with allowing their technology to be used to surveil, intimidate, and control Americans. I'm sure orgs like Heritage and Claremont will say something about this grave threat to liberty, right? [image]

DoW's prerogative to have concerns about Anthropic's policies, and you don't want overreliance on one provider. But given what Anthropic brings to the table, pursuing broader sector decoupling from it would be cutting off your nose to spite your face. Hopefully reporting to that

@Ron @terronk That isn't what is happening. The government isn't shutting anyone down. The topic is whether they should be labeled as a supply chain risk for defense contractors, which is rational for any company that threatens to cut off government agencies that don't do what th…

@terronk Hm no I think the government shouldn't put themselves in a position where they are relying on companies that want to dictate policy in this way
  • @brendannyhan Brendan Nyhan on x
When you live under a personalist regime, you operate at the whim of the personalist ruler. It is, to say the least, bad for business, but no one (especially in Silicon Valley) seems to grasp this. The shakedown will eventually come for you. [image]
  • @tallinzen Tal Linzen on x
Good on Anthropic for setting these boundaries. But this does open up a lot of questions. Is mass surveillance of Canadians fine? If we're worried enough about national security to advocate for a ban on exporting GPUs to China, shouldn't we also be concerned about Chinese drones
  • @palmerluckey Palmer Luckey on x
@terronk This is not a reasonable characterization of what is happening. It isn't a matter of punishing companies for not sharing political views, it is a rational response to a vendor trying to control the government via terms of service in the products they power.
  • @admcrlsn Adam Carlson on x
Anthropic seems to be pretty much the only major AI company with any semblance of a conscience. Like yes obviously they care about the bottom line like any company, but just by being not comically soulless like their competitors, Anthropic gives their PR team a lot to work with. …
  • @terronk Lee Edwards on x
I don't know who needs to hear this, but punishing private companies because their CEOs don't share your politics is really bad capitalism.
  • @erininthemorning.com Erin Reed on bluesky
We live in an autocratic oligarchic hellhole.  —  The Pentagon is basically saying that if Anthropic doesn't drop its demands over restricting the use of AI in autonomous drone targeting and surveillance of Americans, it will essentially destroy the company.
