Axios

Discussion

Among frontier AI leaders, Dario appears to be the only one seriously grappling with the moral and ethical weight of what his company is building.
  • @gestaltu Adam Butler on x
“Anthropic's high ethical standards are becoming a business problem. It will be interesting to see how Anthropic resolves this in the future.” This has nothing to do with defence, and everything to do with money and power. Amodei will be removed and the tech will be weaponized

EXCLUSIVE: Senior @DeptofWar official tells me, “Given Anthropic's @AnthropicAI behavior, many senior officials in the DoW are starting to view them as a supply chain risk and we may require that all our vendors & contractors certify that they don't use any Anthropic models.”
  • @miles_brundage Miles Brundage on x
Pretty obvious to anyone paying close attention that 1. That would be a mistake from a national security perspective 2. There is a coordinated effort to take down Anthropic for a combination of anti competitive and ideological reasons

NEW with @m_ccuri: The Pentagon is threatening to cut ties with Anthropic because the company insists on restricting the military's use of Claude to surveil Americans or develop fully autonomous weapons. Full story: https://www.axios.com/...

This information would have been very useful to investors who put in money at a 380BN valuation just 3 days ago.

UPDATE: After we reported the Pentagon had used Claude in the Maduro raid, a senior administration official told me the Pentagon was reconsidering its partnership with Anthropic because the company had asked questions about its use. https://www.axios.com/...

The Pentagon is considering cutting ties with Anthropic after the company refused to allow its AI models to be used for “all lawful purposes,” insisting on strict bans around mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. Tensions escalated following a disputed episode …

“Anthropic's artificial-intelligence tool Claude was used in the U.S. military's operation to capture former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, highlighting how AI models are gaining traction in the Pentagon, according to people familiar with the matter... The deployment of [im…

Old Claude: We broke trying to run a vending machine. New Claude: We captured Maduro and assassinated all his Cuban guards with no casualties. Would you like me to transition the government to democracy or leave it as is? https://www.wsj.com/...

The fact that somebody is lying about who reached out to who tells me - assuming that the DoD official is the liar in this case - that DoD is using this as an opportunity basically to send a message to the other LLM vendors: you give us the tech, we use it how we want, or you los…

Good.  I hope they maintain this posture.  The rest of Anthropic's competitors have caved.  —  www.axios.com/2026/02/15/c...?

i hope they do sever ties to Anthropic and/or that Anthropic severs ties with the US government [embedded post]

It concerns me that one of the two issues in the DOD vs Anthropic fight is “use for domestic surveillance”, with other articles being clear it's about use to track US citizens.  Why is this a DOD requirement? @wyden.senate.gov  —  www.axios.com/2026/02/15/c...

Let's please NOT celebrate Anthropic.  Let's not forget that they stole from thousands upon thousands of writers and publishers [embedded post]

Hegseth's strange comment that “We will not employ AI models that won't allow you to fight wars” during his speech at SpaceX on January 12 makes more sense now in light of what we are learning about the disagreement with Anthropic over use of its models.
