Amazon's Ring cancels its partnership with Flock Safety, which would have let law enforcement agencies request footage from Ring doorbell users, after backlash

Now, should you trust @ring now?  No. After all they thought this was a good idea.  But this shows that pressure works.  Be the backlash against surveillance that you want to see in the world.  Voice your disgust over surveillance grabs & show it by cancelling subscriptions and t…

This has gotta be one of the biggest self-owns in advertising history. You literally spend millions of dollars for a 30-second Super Bowl spot to tell everyone you're spying on them, immediately destroying your brand reputation and unpending your business model. [image]

I like my (non-Ring) doorbell cam. It helps me see when packages are delivered or when my kids go outside. But I don't want it in a national network of cameras and I sure as hell don't want local law enforcement or ICE to have access to it without a warrant.

We've seen plenty of bad Super Bowl commercials before, but has a company ever created a problem for themselves with one like this before?

one of the most instantly self-destructive Super Bowl ads ever?

    Turns out public outrage matters.

This is because of the work activists put in, that led to press and pressure, and public outrage.  None of what is happening is inevitable.  None of it.  This is a win.  Don't stop stopping them. www.theverge.com/news/878447/ ...

Public pressure works.  If we, as consumers, are loud enough of were we draw the line, we can influence companies.  Keep repeating: no to surveillance and tracking, yes to privacy and local control www.theverge.com/news/878447/ ...

Keep up the pressure.  It works.  Greedy assholes only understand money.  If they are going to lose more money than they will make, they reconsider.

2/ Ring just learned a lesson: Americans want more privacy, not less.  —  We're suspicious of big tech companies encroaching on our personal lives & prepared to show it.  —  Lawmakers take note: pushing back on mass surveillance = grassroots support.  —  By @jp2e.bsky.social …

This is a significant win for critics of Flock.  That terrible Super Bowl ad really did a number on them.  Heh.  —  www.theverge.com/news/878447/ ...

Lesson here is don't piss the We Rate Dogs guy off
  • @ellenenders Ellen Enders on bluesky
How much of this as a result of post Super Bowl ad backlash, WeRateDogs owner's rant, people discovering the ICE partnership...?  All of them?  Would Ring have stayed if nobody found out?  Sure  —  blog.ring.com/about-ring/r...  [embedded post]

Some good news today!  🏆  —  The backlash against these dystopian mass #surveillance tech companies will continue... don't let up!

“Boycotting doesn't do anything.  Posting doesn't do anything.”  Doomers suck.  Apathetic people suck.  SO MUCH has changed this year alone because folks have boycotted and been LOUD and we will continue to bc the alternative is (lemongrab voice) unnnnnaccceptableeeee!  Still get…
