It is with great sadness and abiding hope that I leave my role as AAG for Antitrust today. It was indeed the honor of a lifetime to serve in this role. Huge thanks to all who supported me this past year, most especially the men and women of @justiceatr

    Good riddance.

Amid grotesque pay-to-play by the Trump administration, the DOJ has now removed its AAG for merger control. Slater knows what really happened with HPE Juniper and Live Nation, and likely much more. She should speak out now before she's subpoenaed by a Democratic House.

@gailaslater @JusticeATR This is a big loss for the admin. Gail is top notch on antitrust, not sure how this gets replaced.

One of the few pockets of economic populism left in the Trump administration — the assertive anti-trust division in the DOJ led by Vance ally @gailaslater — is all but extinguished, as Pam Bondi and an array of corporate lobbyists finally drive her out (Vance gave the OK).

🇺🇸 Shock in Washington! Gail Slater, head of antitrust at the DoJ, resigns. ⚖️ Republican infighting: political pressure, pro-Trump populism, a Wild West where the strongest prevail. A worrying signal for the independence of US antitrust enforcement...

Many of those discussing Paramount/Netflix battle for Warner Bros are overstating the U.S. regulatory challenges — including Trump role — and understating the global regulatory challenges.

For what it's worth, the conversation just before this photo was about the then-new assistant attorney general for antitrust Gail Slater. Steve Bannon pointed to Lina Khan and said, “We're in an uneasy coalition. Gail Slater's key to that.”

I've always had respect for Gail, even when we disagree. But like many Trump appointees who came before her, she convinced herself that Trump 2.0 was going to be about something - in this case, “populist” antitrust - than about Trump's essential self-centered grift.

Talked to Mike Davis at Y Combinator's “Little Tech Competition Summit” in April—so, about ten months ago—and asked him about Assistant Attorney General Gail Slater. Just checked my notebook: “She's great. She's one of my best friends in Washington.”

I had some hopes for Trump antitrust appointee Gail Slater. She's not corrupt. And she was surrounded by enemies and was constantly being undermined. That said, she didn't go down fighting on principle. She was meek and cynical, and got knifed anyway.
  • @chriscoons Senator Chris Coons on x
Gail Slater was confirmed with broad bipartisan support because she was committed to fairly enforcing our antitrust laws. That's the same reason she was pushed out. This administration wants full control over DOJ to help the Epstein class, and they're hoping we all don't notice.

anybody who took MAGA claims of “reining in big tech” and “populist antitrust reform” seriously circa 2020-2025 should be sentenced to mandatory community service [embedded post]
