Waymo raised $16B led by Sequoia, DST, and Dragoneer at a $126B valuation, plans an expansion across the US and into the UK in 2026, and makes 400K+ rides/week
Waymo, Alphabet Inc.'s autonomous driving unit, raised $16 billion at a $126 billion valuation, a funding round that reflects its rapid ascent as a robotaxi pioneer.
The round arrives as Waymo reports more than 400,000 weekly rides and plans broader US and UK operations. That operational footprint matters because scaling robotaxis requires not only vehicles and software but also the human support systems Waymo uses for roadside interventions.
First-order effects
Waymo gains $16B of fresh capital to support its planned geographic expansion, while Alphabet, Sequoia, DST Global, and Dragoneer become more closely tied to the company’s execution at a $126B valuation.
A larger fleet and service area will likely increase demand for Waymo’s existing intervention network, including workers dispatched through Honk for door closures, towing, and roadside assistance.
Second-order effects
Tesla and other robotaxi contenders face a sharper benchmark: Waymo combines substantial private funding with a reported 400,000-plus weekly ride base, raising the pressure to demonstrate comparable operational scale rather than only technical capability.
Expansion can pull more local towing, roadside-assistance, and contract-worker capacity into the robotaxi supply chain, exposing the practical cost and availability of human fallback services as fleets grow.
Third-order effects
The raise reinforces a market structure in which robotaxi deployment may favor companies able to finance years of fleet build-out, safety operations, and market launches before unit economics are fully proven.
If robotaxi networks expand across jurisdictions, oversight is likely to focus increasingly on the operational boundary between autonomous systems and human intervention—especially how companies manage exceptions and supervisor workload.
The trend: Robotaxis are becoming a capital-intensive infrastructure business, where funding depth and operational support networks increasingly shape who can scale autonomous driving services.
a16z GP David George: “We were the only VC fund that invested in Waymo in early 2020.” “It was extraordinary. I mean, the project was magic even at the time.” “We did demo rides... it could drive smoother than a human... they could do all these really special things that you [vid…

We're proud to back @Waymo in their latest $16B financing — one of our largest bets as AI autonomy shapes the future of mobility 🚘 For two decades, Waymo has led the charge in safe, fully driverless tech and set a new global standard in autonomy, safety, & accessibility. [image]
I started my day by hopping into a Waymo and having it drive me from my home on the Peninsula to my office in SF. 33 miles. Two freeways (280 and 101). Rush hour traffic. Bumper to bumper. 46 minutes. And it was perfect. Seamless. I had two confidential calls to make. No [image]
Waymo is the driver I trust most, and I'm not alone. 400k+ rides every week across 6 US metros. It's clearly time to scale @Waymo. 20+ new cities across the US + international in '26. We @a16z are fired up to deepen our partnership and quadruple down in the Series D. [image]
127M+ fully autonomous miles and counting. Proud to be along for the ride with @Waymo. Read more about our investment: https://www.kleinerperkins.com/ ... [video]
waymo is doing literal on the ground sci fi w/ autonomous point a to b for humans & goods at scale (a *real* human problem since the dawn of existence) & the valuation is only 1/6th of openai & less than half of anthropic? that's remarkable. why wasn't i invited to invest?
