OpenAI has hired 7+ employees from AI coding startup Cline, including Nik Pash, who left Cline after posting “imagine the smell” on X regarding an xAI hackathon
OpenAI has recently hired more than a half dozen employees from Cline, a startup that develops an open-source …
The move comes after Cline raised a $27 million Series A for its open-source coding tool, making the departure of more than seven employees consequential for a company still building its organization and product.
First-order effects
OpenAI adds a group of people with direct experience building an open-source AI coding product, including Nik Pash.
Cline loses more than seven employees shortly after its financing, creating an immediate staffing and continuity challenge.
Second-order effects
AI coding startups face greater pressure to retain technical staff as well-capitalized model providers recruit teams rather than rely only on partnerships or external developer ecosystems.
OpenAI’s hiring reinforces the competitive importance of coding capabilities, an area where its rivalry with Anthropic had already driven product responses, including efforts to strengthen ChatGPT’s coding skills.
Third-order effects
If repeated, team-level recruiting could concentrate AI developer-tool expertise inside frontier-model companies, making independent coding-tool startups more dependent on differentiated communities, workflows, or business models.
The pattern may further blur the boundary between model suppliers and developer-tool vendors as leading labs assemble both the underlying models and the teams that build coding interfaces around them.
The trend: Frontier AI labs are competing for AI-coding talent and product teams as coding becomes a core distribution channel for their models.
further chapter on the @pashmerepat story is i introduced him to the codex team after the cline tweet debacle and good things seem to have happened as their whole team started on codex this week
News: OpenAI confirms it has hired at least 7 staffers from AI coding startup Cline, says it was not part of an acquisition. The hires could help OpenAI improve Codex to compete with Anthropic's Claude Code. More here: https://www.theinformation.com/ ...
Nik Pash was fired by Cline for making racist comments about Indian coders and is now hired by OpenAI, working on the Codex team. OpenAI, you have lost all respect. [image]
> Nik Pash makes racist anti-India comments > Cline fires him > His team quits in protest > OpenAI immediately hires the whole group Morality is clearly optional at the top. [image]
After a long year scaling Cline, I've joined @OpenAI on the codex team. The codex team has some of the brightest minds in the world, and I'm so excited to continue pushing the frontier of agentic intelligence.
After Cline CEO threw his employee under the bus, and given in it the internet mob, I saw 3 ex/cline folks join OpenAI today! Truly such a self own that fiasco 🤦♂️
