As tech CEOs stay silent after two fatal shootings, 450+ workers at Google, Meta, OpenAI, Amazon, and others urge CEOs to cancel any ICE contracts and speak out

Some tech workers are pressuring the industry's top leaders to speak out against ICE after federal officers killed Alex Pretti

Ten years ago I wrote an essay explaining the source of America's increasing polarization. If you want to understand how we got from the unity (and uniformity) of the mid 20th century to the way things are now, this is what happened: https://paulgraham.com/re.html
  • @nsthorat Nikhil Thorat on x
I've said most of what I need to say here, but I find it somewhat hopeful that many of the people I respect in tech are now speaking up about ICE and this oppressive govt after the latest state sponsored murder. And that people are distancing themselves from those VCs who are

If someone had predicted before the last election that if Trump won, federal officers would be shooting Americans in the streets, he'd have been dismissed as an alarmist.
  • @jeffdean Jeff Dean on x
This is absolutely shameful. Agents of a federal agency unnecessarily escalating, and then executing a defenseless citizen whose offense appears to be using his cell phone camera. Every person regardless of political affiliation should be denouncing this.
  • @zachtratar Zach Tratar on x
I've been in tech 15 years. The tech leaders who are *supporting* ICE? They're the exact folks everyone knows as narcissistic sociopaths. It's almost a 100% hit rate. It does make sense, I guess. To approve of this, you have to lack a sense of humanity.
  • @simpsoka Kath Korevec on x
I can't go to Minneapolis. And it's only a matter of time before they show up in force here in the Bay Area. So here's what I'm doing to help my neighbors prepare. I'm researching local organizations that support immigrants across legal aid, health care, advocacy, and community
  • @dyett James Dyett on x
There is far more outrage from tech leaders over a wealth tax than masked ICE agents terrorizing communities and executing civilians in the streets. Tells you what you need to know about the values of our industry.
  • @erichorvitz Eric Horvitz on x
    Values, service, and character.
  • @paulg Paul Graham on x
He's right you know. How bad do things have to get before you say something?
  • @sherveen Sherveen Mashayekhi on x
This is the thing I've been trying to say, and James has said it better here. We're currently negotiating for whether there's an America the way there used to be, which the tech worker class really cares about, and the oligarchic class is asking us to care about tax details.

Well said, Chris. As my former intern, I've always been proud of the work that you did and continue to do, and I'm proud of the high moral-integrity person you are, as well! 🙏

I try to not talk about politics. I generally believe the best way I can serve the world is as a non-partisan expert, and my genuine beliefs are quite moderate. So the bar is very high for me to comment. But recent events - a federal agent killing an ICU nurse for seemingly no

This is something we agree on: from all that I've learned in the last couple of days, Alex Pretti was a wonderful human being. Thank you for recognizing, @erichorvitz.

I agree with @EthanChoi7 . Macho ICE vigilantes running amuck empowered by a conscious-less administration. The video was sickening to watch and the storytelling without facts or with invented fictitious facts by authorities almost unimaginable in a civilized society. ICE
  • @davidmarcus David Marcus on x
It's not because these anti-ICE protests are mostly inorganic and designed to generate this chaos, or that protesters show up with loaded guns that you can't also be totally appalled by citizens being shot dead on our streets. Let's just remember we're all Americans for a second.
  • @rabois Keith Rabois on x
@RichardHanania no law enforcement has shot an innocent person. illegals are committing violent crimes everyday.
  • @ethanchoi7 Ethan Choi on x
@adam__xyz I want to make it clear that Keith doesn't represent everyone's views here at @khoslaventures, at least not mine. What happened in Minnesota is plain wrong. Don't know how you could really see it differently. Sad to see a person's life taken unnecessarily.
  • @richardhanania Richard Hanania on x
Who has shot more people in Minneapolis over the last few months, federal agents or illegal immigrants?
  • @adam__xyz Adam Del on x

After a quick scan of the #ICEout signature list for tech workers: Google employees seem to be most willing to speak up still (I'm not surprised).  Microsoft far behind.  —  Meta, Apple, Amazon - very slim count.  OpenAI - very, very few. https://iceout.tech/

The tech tide turned this weekend. We launched our https://iceout.tech/ pledge 18 days ago. We shared with friends, who signed. But something new is happening—across NVIDIA, Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Salesforce, Adobe, PayPal, YouTube, Slack, Meta—we are now hundreds strong.

These are times which separate the wheat from the chaff. Those brave enough to speak their moral revulsion to the unwinding of a society based on law and order and decency are to be lauded. Those who stay silent or defend it in the pursuit of wealth or worse are not. Be like Jeff

VPs, AI researchers, CEOs, senior engineers, product designers, investors and more, are all saying together: This cannot continue. We want to be proud to work in tech. We want to be proud of the companies we work for. We can and must use our leverage to end this violence.

@paulg Trump is just the trigger. There are deep historical forces: The dismantling of the FCC fairness doctrine by Reagan, the resulting emergence of Fox News, conservative talk radio, and other propaganda outlets, the removal of guardrails for the influence of money in politics…

That was unexpected. So @garrytan blocked me for asking him a question about the current situation. Weird. Didn't expect it from him. He's not MAGA, he has never shown himself as anti-human. Politically, he's very open with his views - he's a moderate Democrat who didn't vote [im…

The quiet majority in tech are sick & tired of the complete bullshit coming from Trump & his ICE thugs. However, the CEOs are still supporting him. It's time to ramp up the pressure on them. Spread the word.

love @JeffDean — wish more folks at this level would make clear statements about right & wrong. it also seems ridiculous that many feel they must walk on eggshells to denounce unequivocal physical, moral, and constitutional harm done by this administration. call a spade a spade

What's it like working at @xai right now? Do you guys have to pretend you're on the side of ICE to your colleagues? Or only when Elon is in the room?
  • @allgarbled Gabe on x
Don't like this kind of policing of what people are not saying. This culture of you HAVE to speak up and WHY are you silent on this issue is one of the most annoying things we created in the last however many years. Please don't try to bring this back. [image]

man, silence from garry tan on ICE is quite a shift from a few years ago. just tweeting about claude like nothing is going on. power corrupts, dunno.
  • @tab_delete Theo Baker on x
.@garrytan is an example of an inveterate tech twitter poster. In the last 24 hours, he's found time to comment on admissions standards for colleges, drug use in San Francisco, and how terrible a wealth tax would be. Want to guess what he hasn't mentioned?

I've been working on this essay for a while, and it is mainly about AI and about the future. But given the horror we're seeing in Minnesota, its emphasis on the importance of preserving democratic values and rights at home is particularly relevant.
  • @jason @jason on x
@EricNewcomer this shouldn't be complicated... even if you're the biggest DJT fan in the world: 1. I agree strongly with the following Trump policies: TK, TK and TK. 2. I strongly disagree with how ICE and DHS are handling immigration enforcement.
  • @dflieb David Lieb on x
Each side is going to see what they want to see, I guess. I know what I see, which is another citizen killed for no good reason. What I'd hope everyone can agree on: our government is deliberately choosing to put citizens in this situation. It needs to stop. They work for us.
