ZachXBT: a crypto user lost $282M+ in BTC and LTC in a hardware wallet social engineering scam; XMR jumped as the attacker began converting the funds to Monero
Partner offers — Quick Take — XMR hit an all-time high of $797.73 on Jan. 14, coinciding with a series …
The reported move from BTC and LTC into XMR makes the case relevant beyond the victim’s loss. It links a wallet-compromise event to the market and tracing challenges created when stolen assets are converted into a privacy-focused cryptocurrency.
First-order effects
The victim has lost control of more than $282 million in BTC and LTC, while investigators and market watchers must follow conversions into XMR rather than a static wallet balance.
Monero receives immediate scrutiny after its price peak coincided with the reported conversion activity; the reported timing does not by itself establish that the attacker caused the move.
Second-order effects
Hardware-wallet providers and self-custody users face renewed pressure to improve defenses against social-engineering tactics, not just device or software vulnerabilities.
Exchanges and other conversion venues handling XMR may face heightened monitoring demands as efforts to trace and contain the stolen funds shift across assets.
Third-order effects
If large thefts repeatedly move through privacy-focused assets, crypto security will increasingly hinge on identity, recovery, and transaction-monitoring controls around wallet use—not solely on blockchain-level transparency.
The pattern could further separate the perceived safety of holding one’s own keys from the practical security of managing them, as high-value holders weigh stronger operational controls against self-custody autonomy.
The trend: Crypto theft is broadening from exchange and protocol compromises into social-engineering attacks on self-custody, with cross-asset conversion complicating recovery efforts.
On January 10, 2026 at around 11 pm UTC a victim lost $282M+ worth of LTC & BTC due to a hardware wallet social engineering scam. The attacker began converting the stolen LTC & BTC to Monero via multiple instant exchanges causing the XMR price to sharply increase. BTC was also
Yet again, the cause of the price pump was due a large hack. Is this legitimate? Based on how quickly the purchases were, it seems awfully likely. The last major Monero pump last year was caused in a similar manner. Some may speculate that these are lies meant to downplay
2 million litecoin stolen by scammers and started being swapped into Monero on the 10th. Litecoin is artificially low and Monero is artificially high. [image]
there's always one common thing in these stuffs: Monero $XMR sad it's used for hacks, money laundering, and to purchase illegal items. XMR isn't bad itself, it's just bad actors using it but this proves that it's working exactly as intended: real privacy and anonymity still
I don't know the details of this particular scam, but hardware wallet social engineering often focuses on compromising your seed phrase. Your HW wallet seed should ALWAYS stay offline. Never enter it onto anything but another hardware wallet. $282M... sheesh.
The duality of the “privacy” that CT always speak of I can be 100% certain that your favourite KOLs preaching the “privacy” narrative will be kicking their own balls when they lose their funds I do see the point and value of privacy but I also think that anything to do with
Thanks to a tip from @Bitcoin_Vietnam about suspicious activity and a rapid response from the @zeroshadow_io team, over $1M+ of proceeds of this theft have been frozen today. If data sharing in crypto was normalised, substantially more than this could have been caught.
gm gm frens another reminder to stay sharp!! as per @zachxbt a single victim lost more than $282M in $BTC and $LTC after falling for a hardware wallet social engineering attack some of the funds were swapped into $XMR which briefly moved the market attacker also used [image]
