Iranian authorities are blocking access to Telegram for the majority of Iranians after our public refusal to shut down https://t.me/... and other peacefully protesting channels.

A Telegram channel (amadnews) started to instruct their subscribers to use Molotov cocktails against police and got suspended due to our “no calls for violence” rule. Be careful - there are lines one shouldn't cross. Similar case from October - http://telegra.ph/...

Calls for violence are prohibited by the Telegram rules. If confirmed, we'll have to block such a channel, regardless of its size and political affiliation.

Telegram closed a massively popular channel “AmadNews” which was one of the main organizers of protests in #Iran for inciting violence. The organizers then opened new channels and announced that they fired one admin for violating rules. http://twitter.com/...

Authorities in #Iran have a record of trying to control @telegram. With traditional media tightly censored, Iranians rely on the app for news, despite its security flaws. Read @CPJMENA's blog post from May 2017. #telegram #Tehran #IranProtest https://cpj.org/...

The channel attracted more followers over the last few days, getting something around 1.5 million followers. Telegram, w/ something between 25 to 40 million users in Iran, is the major platform for news & communications where the media is highly regulated. http://twitter.com/...

Many don't seem to understand why I object to @Telegram having unsafe, censorable public channels in an app that is promoted as a secure messenger. Some presumed I just don't understand how channels work. So let's talk about it:

@Durov: A Telegram channel is encouraging hateful conduct, use of Molotov cocktails, armed uprising, and social unrest. NOW is the time to stop such encouragements via Telegram.

@telegram Background: @Telegram has a special position in Iran. Its “public channels” are an important source of news for many low-tech users. Competing services are often blocked, but Telegram makes concessions to avoid this (like setting up local CDNs http://www.iranhumanrights…

Opposing violence is great, but the idea that a company making a “secure messaging” app like @Telegram even has the *ability* to read what people are saying on it (and censor it) is a catastrophic breach of trust. Uninstall it and use Signal by @whispersystems or @WhatsApp. http:…

Despite reports of an Internet blackout in Iran, Iranian BGP routes are still up and @Dyn is still handling a normal volume of DNS queries from Iran. We will continue to monitor the situation. pic.twitter.com/C3LGpHu35f
