Instagram confirms it's testing a feature that allows cross-posting of Stories to WhatsApp as a Status

TechCrunch Ingrid Lunden

Context & Ripple Effects

This test extends a playbook Instagram started months earlier, when it began letting users post Instagram Stories directly to Facebook Stories. WhatsApp is the natural next hop: its Status feature was already rebuilt in 2017 as a Stories clone, displacing the old text-only Status in the process.

First-order effects

  • Instagram users gain a one-tap path to reach WhatsApp contacts with Story content they have already created, instead of rebuilding it inside WhatsApp.
  • WhatsApp Status gets a fresh supply of visual content at no cost to Meta, addressing the emptier state of a surface whose Stories-style format is newer to its user base.

Second-order effects

  • Cross-posting deepens the family-of-apps lock-in Meta has been building piece by piece — the same logic behind the later Facebook-to-Instagram Stories tests and, ultimately, Meta's plan to link WhatsApp accounts with Instagram and Facebook.
  • Snapchat, whose Stories format all three Meta apps have now adopted, faces competitors whose combined reach makes format parity alone insufficient as a differentiator.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, Meta converges its apps' ephemeral-sharing surfaces into a single de facto Stories layer spanning Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp — blurring product boundaries inside the family while raising the wall around it.

The trend: Meta is progressively stitching its apps' Stories surfaces into one interoperable layer, with each cross-posting test narrowing the distinction between Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
