Stripe acquires Nigerian startup Paystack, which enables integration of payments services using an API, sources say for $200M+

TechCrunch Ingrid Lunden

Context & Ripple Effects

Stripe's move into Nigeria comes four years after the company banked its expansion capital — the $150M Series D at a $9B valuation led by General Catalyst and CapitalG — and one year after Visa chose a different entry into the same market, taking a reported $200M minority stake in Nigerian payments giant Interswitch at a $1B valuation ahead of a planned IPO.

Paystack's product is integration itself: an API that lets businesses plug in payments services rather than build them. By acquiring it outright instead of taking a stake, Stripe converts the developer-facing wedge Visa tested into full ownership of the local payments rail.

First-order effects

  • Nigerian merchants and developers integrating payments through Paystack's API now sit on Stripe's balance sheet, giving Stripe an operating footprint in Africa it did not have last week.
  • Visa's bet on Interswitch — a stake sized, per reports, at roughly the same $200M as Stripe's whole-company purchase of Paystack — suddenly has a direct competitor at the developer layer of Nigerian payments.

Second-order effects

  • Interswitch, which said it planned an H1 2020 IPO when Visa invested, now competes for merchant integrations against a global platform whose API distribution model undercuts incumbent pricing structures.
  • Other global processors evaluating Africa face the same fork this deal crystallizes: acquire a local API provider or cede the developer integration layer to whoever did.

Third-order effects

  • If the stake-then-acquisition sequence holds — Visa's Interswitch position followed by Stripe's Paystack buyout — African payments infrastructure consolidates around global rails rather than remaining a field of independent local providers, a shift regulators of cross-border payments have yet to test.

The trend: Global payments platforms are graduating from minority investments in African payments companies to outright acquisitions of local API providers, buying distribution instead of building it.

I couldn't be more delighted that @Paystack will be joining us at @Stripe. The African tech ecosystem is expanding very rapidly. We and the Paystack team are eager to invest in a big way over the years to come. https://stripe.com/... https://twitter.com/...

For many in the Nigerian tech ecosystem, it was just a matter of time before this happened. Stripe, the lead investor in Paystack's Series A funding has acquired the Nigerian payments startup for a rumoured $200m. https://techpoint.africa/...

Paystack will continue to operate independently and there will be no disruption of service. With Stripe's support and expertise, we will provide deeper integrations with global platforms and accelerate our geographic expansion. https://paystack.com/...

There are ~200M people in Nigeria & paperless payments are how most people do transactions. Super smart move by @stripe to get into this young, tech-fwd market by buying local rather than trying to build for Nigeria from SV. https://twitter.com/...

Loved hearing about the influence of Lagos and seeing the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge. Well done to the Paystack team. Great news about the power of the youth in Lagos. I understand that this is further proof of the importance of ending police brutality and allowing the youth thrive. http…

Taking a breather to acknowledge this amazing news. Stripe acquisition of Paystack which is estimated to be around $200m is the biggest startup acquisition to date to come out of Nigeria, as well as Stripe's biggest acquisition to date anywhere. https://techcrunch.com/...

Stripe, valued at $36b is acquiring Nigeria's Paystack for deal estimated to be about $200M+ NOW THIS IS AN EXIT!!!! Young people are really doing the MOST! https://techcrunch.com/...

I visited @Paystack in Lagos last year. Scheduling was messy so I only had a one way flight at first. We had a running joke that Paystack reminded me so much of @Stripe that I'd never leave—particularly the team's obsession over users. Now we're closer than ever. Better together.…

Five years ago, we set out with the audacious goal to build a “Stripe for Africa” and we literally became Stripe, for Africa! 🤘 https://twitter.com/...

Congratulations to Paystack, who are paving the way both for the 60,000 users they've built infrastructure for, and for other Nigerian founders, who'll find it easier to raise money once investors realize what a rapidly growing market Nigeria is. https://techcrunch.com/...
