Twitter says iOS users can now add tweets to Snapchat Snaps as stickers, and it will soon test sharing tweets to Instagram Stories

The Verge Mitchell Clark

Context & Ripple Effects

This is the latest turn in a long unbundling of the walled gardens: back in 2018, Snap opened select public Stories to sharing outside its app, and sticker layers have been a sharing primitive since Facebook's Stickered app put stickers on Messenger photos in 2014.

Twitter is now riding that same plumbing in reverse — instead of exporting its own content, it is embedding tweets onto rivals' canvases, starting with Snapchat Snaps on iOS and extending to an Instagram Stories test. The significance is distribution: tweet screenshots were already the lingua franca of other apps, and this makes that flow official and attributed.

First-order effects

  • iOS users can place tweets directly into Snaps as native stickers rather than screenshots, giving Twitter branded, tappable placement inside Snapchat's camera flow.
  • An upcoming Instagram Stories test would extend the same embed behavior to Meta's surface, putting Twitter content where Instagram's larger daily audience already posts.

Second-order effects

  • Snap and Instagram effectively host a competitor's content in exchange for richer user posts, forcing both to judge whether embedded tweets drive engagement back to Twitter or siphon original posting away from their own text surfaces.
  • Rival text-first platforms face pressure to negotiate similar sticker integrations, since unattributed screenshots — the current default — benefit no one's metrics.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, the major social apps converge on a shared embedding layer where each platform's content circulates as a component inside the others, eroding the walled-garden assumption that reach must be earned on-platform.
  • Attribution mechanics like tappable stickers give platforms a measurable stake in off-platform virality, which could shape future revenue-sharing and API-access decisions around who may embed whose content.

The trend: Social platforms are shifting from sealed feeds toward cross-app content embedding, with stickers and share formats becoming the interoperability layer between rival networks.

Back in 2012, Instagram disabled the Twitter card preview support. That's months after April 9, 2012 I wish one day they could change their mind about it https://twitter.com/...

No need to jankily share screenshots! On iOS, you can now share directly to Snapchat from Twitter. And when people see these tweets in Snapchat, they'll be able to tap to see all the replies on Twitter! https://twitter.com/...

In a world where most social media companies have severed ties with each other, this is a very clever move - not least on the analytics front. In fact, Twitter should go a step further and allow users to post directly to Instagram as well. https://twitter.com/...

Interesting that Twitter built a clone of Snapchat stories but you can't post those to Snapchat or create Fleets from your Snapchat stories. https://twitter.com/...
