Twitter says it is testing Shop Module, a new shopping section that brands can add to the top of their profiles, launching in the US on iOS

Starting with a pilot of around a dozen brands  —  Twitter is piloting a new feature that allows businesses to add a shopping section to the top of their profiles, the company has announced.

The Verge Jon Porter

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitter has tried social commerce before: back in 2015 it tested product and place pages with buy buttons and curated collections, then struck a deal to offer 'Buy' buttons to as many as 100,000 merchants through Shopify. That first wave faded, and the platform leaned back on advertising — which still accounted for $1.08 billion of its Q2 2022 revenue.

Shop Module restarts that playbook at smaller scale: a pilot of roughly a dozen US brands gets a shopping section pinned to the top of their iOS profiles. It is the opening move in a sequence that later produced Twitter Shops with up-to-50-item storefronts, Product Drops for pre-sale teasers, and a Shopify sales-channel app feeding Twitter's Shopping Manager.

First-order effects

  • The dozen pilot brands immediately gain a merchandising surface above their timeline on iOS in the US, turning profile visits into product browsing without leaving the app.
  • Twitter's product team gets a live testbed to measure whether profile-level storefronts drive purchases before committing to a wider rollout.

Second-order effects

  • Merchants already running Shopify stores can treat Twitter as another sales channel rather than a referral source, which pressures rival platforms to match integrated storefront tooling.
  • If the pilot converts, brands shift budget from pure promoted tweets toward shoppable formats, giving Twitter a commerce-adjacent revenue line alongside advertising.

Third-order effects

  • The pattern across Shop Module, Shops, Product Drops, and the Shopify partnership points toward social platforms absorbing the storefront layer itself — keeping checkout intent on-platform instead of exporting clicks to brand websites.
  • For advertisers, success would mean Twitter competing less on reach alone and more on where purchase decisions happen, reshaping how social ad inventory is priced against commerce outcomes.

The trend: Social platforms keep rebuilding native commerce — from buy buttons to profile storefronts — trying to convert attention into transactions without losing users to external sites.

Come to Twitter to Tweet, follow along with live events, and now...to shop. We're testing Shop Module on iOS. Get the products you want from the places you love — right from a brand's profile. https://twitter.com/...

the shop module is so great fun fact - when we were first playing with commerce many moons ago, you could order things via the internal build and have them delivered to your desk by someone on the team. it was mostly candy. lots of candy. https://twitter.com/...

🔥 $TWTR The pace of integration at @twitter in 2021 is so dramatically different than it was 2-3 years ago it's like an entirely new company pushing out product and features both for consumers and advertisers https://twitter.com/...

My condolences to the teams at Twitter who will have to spend the next year debating whether webviews or replicating parts of the purchasing funnel natively is better and why. https://twitter.com/...

Twitter joins the social media platforms that pivot to e-commerce This is a beginning. I wonder if there'll be full-blown Shop pages on Twitter in the future https://twitter.com/...

this is perhaps the perfect picture of the bull and bear case for twitter in two paragraphs from @boo, but kudos on the honesty https://blog.twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...

You may start seeing Shop modules on some profiles! We're in the early stages of experimenting with this, so let us know what you think and how we can improve! https://twitter.com/...

It's now boring to praise how much Twitter is executing on product but this is still unexpected. Brands on Twitter will now have a shop module just like they do on Facebook & Instagram. First Clubhouse and now this. @kayvz, @nickcald & @dantley are coming for everyone's necks. ht…
